Mindy and Cyrus were stuck at a road block on highway 257. They could see that the highway disappeared about two hundred yards ahead but the turn left to head toward the road that lead to the Cementex plant was only a hundred yards away.
“Captain, do you know why you are out here?” Mindy said to a Captain that was at her window while she was stopped at a checkpoint. They were not going to let her pass.
“Not really, no, but we have our orders to not let anyone through and that means you so you will have to turn around and leave the area until people are allowed to pass.” The Captain said nicely.
“I think you need to know for your safety. Would you like us to show you why you are out here?” Mindy asked.
“You know why we are out here?” The Captain asked.
“I do not know exactly why you are right here but we can show you what is happening if you will follow us in to our house.” Mindy said.
“Will it take long and is your house far away?” The Captain asked.
“The house is quite a ways from here but we only need to turn left to get to our house just ahead before we even enter the closed area.” Mindy said.
“If you have a flashlight, or something with batteries Captain, I can show you what is happening right here.” Cyrus said to the Captain.
“What do you need to do sir?”
“Just take the flashlight and walk forward with it. You can come if you want to. You will see what is happening, fast.” Cyrus said.
“That sounds alright. We could do that. Come on out of the Jeep.”
Cyrus exited the Jeep. Then, he asked the Captain if he had a flashlight. “This is a flashlight.”
“Turn it on and start walking with me. We could have her follow in the Jeep but we will need a few extra men so you can see what you are up against.” Cyrus said.
“Let’s just the two of us walk up there, first and then I will decide.” The Captain said.
“That’s fine with me.” Cyrus started to walk forward and the Captain walked along with him.
Once they stepped past where the highway disappeared, Cyrus pointed out that the flashlight went dim. The further they walked in the flashlight grew dimmer until it went dead.
“Do you have anything else like a phone?” Cyrus asked.
“I have a phone but it doesn’t work so I have it off.” The Captain said.
“Try to turn it on it is dead in here.”
The Captain tried to turn on his phone but it would not turn on. “It was fully charged and now it is suddenly dead.”
“Now let’s walk back and leave the flashlight on.” Cyrus said.
They did so and as they approached the boundary the flashlight began to grow brighter. “Turn on your phone again.” Cyrus said.
The Captain turned on his phone and it came on but was still weak.
“Now let’s walk back some more and watch, your phone will be fully charged.”
“This is unbelievable.” The Captain said.
“Just remember if this thing grows, whatever it is, nothing electrical will work. And my name is Cyrus Weeks, I was born in 1821 in Connecticut and have a ranch in the year 1856 and I would like to get back to my own time please.” Cyrus said.
“That is not possible.” The Captain said incredulous.
“Tonight, when the moon comes up, because you are so close to the boundary, you just might see two moons instead of one. One of the moons will be in the year 1856 and the other will be the moon in the time that is now. Oh, and the President of the United States knows about me.”
“This is unbelievable.” The Captain said.
“We could have my wife show you by driving her Jeep over here but we will need some more men to push it back to the right time.” Cyrus said to the Captain.
“Okay we’ll do it.” The Captain said.
“I want three volunteers to follow us in, Sergeant.” He ordered.
“Yes sir. You, you, and you follow the Captain back in there.” The Sergeant ordered three NG’s.
Cyrus waved to Mindy to drive the Jeep forward. She started the Jeep and it rolled forward with the three soldiers walking alongside. She drove slow so they could keep up.
Cyrus and the Captain walked forward past the end of the highway and into the different time. Mindy and the soldiers followed and eventually the Jeep stalled. Mindy tried to start the Jeep but it just barely clicked.
“Let’s push her back out.” Cyrus said to the Captain.
The men pushed the Jeep back until it was back in 2012. Mindy started it and put the Jeep in reverse until she was even with the road.
“The other reason I suggested you come with us is because two flying things called jets hit the ground and exploded into flames a couple of miles from my ranch and maybe they are still alive. I don’t know about jets but maybe you want some men to check and we know where that happened.” Cyrus said.
“There is no way to communicate but that would be a good idea to send out a search party for the pilots.” The Captain said.
“I have three horses they can use if they know how to ride.” Cyrus said.
“I have three men who can ride well, Mr. Weeks. Yes, I can spare three for that detail.” The Captain turned to his Platoon Sergeant and gave the orders for one humvee with a Sergeant and two chosen soldiers who could ride horses to follow the Jeep to the ranch.
Cyrus explained to Mindy what was happening. In a few minutes, the soldiers were ready and in their humvee, so Mindy drove off with them following.
In about a half an hour, they arrived at the ranch but parked about three hundred yards from the house.
Cyrus talked to the soldiers and told them to leave their humvee here. He also asked them if they would help push the Jeep back so it would start. Cyrus wanted to park the Jeep as close to the house as possible so they could unload. The soldiers agreed and Mindy drove the Jeep closer to the house. The Jeep stalled about a hundred and fifty feet from the house and Bobby showed up.
“Mindy, this is Bobby, my brother. Bobby this is Mindy my wife. We were married this morning.”
“How do you do Mindy, nice to meet ya.” Bobby said. “Welcome to the family.”
After niceties and welcoming hugs, everyone unloaded the Jeep. There were so many people helping that it took no time at all. Cyrus carried Mindy through the door when they were done and gave her a huge kiss.
“I am going to help Bobby get these soldiers on horses and then we’ll be back.” Cyrus said to Mindy.
“Since you’re newlyweds, I can do it by myself.” Bobby said. “I might just go with them, if that’s okay so that you two can be alone. I have a stew cooking.”
“You’ll need to take some food with you.” Cyrus said to Bobby.
“Congratulations on being just married.” The Sergeant said. “We have enough food with us to share with him. So, don’t worry about the food.”
“He’ll be a good guide. He saw them hit. Didn’t you Bobby?”
“Yes. I know where they are at.” Bobby answered.
“We’ll good luck to you.” Cyrus said to Bobby and the soldiers.
“Should we push the Jeep back now?” One of the soldiers asked.
“We can get it later. We want to settle in for a while.” Cyrus replied.
“Gotcha.” The Sergeant said, “Come on men, let’s get to it.”
Bobby and the soldiers left toward the barn and Cyrus and Mindy went into the house. “Come here you.” Cyrus said as he hung up his coat and hat, stowed his pistol and his knife.
“Shouldn’t we put all this stuff away first?” Mindy asked.
“Should we?” Cyrus asked Mindy as she came to him and removed her coat.
“Did you bolt the door?”
“I will, do you have any questions you want me to answer?” Cyrus asked Mindy as he bolted the door closed.
“I can think of a few to ask. Do I have to take off your boots?” Mindy asked as the flickering lights that escaped the burners of the pot belly stove danced along the walls and ceiling of their little house.
“You look beautiful in that dress and shoes.” Cyrus said as he sat down in the overstuffed chair. He removed his boots.
“Oh, so you like dresses and high heels do you?” Mindy smiled. She checked the stew and stirred it. “Needs a little more wood.”
“I have some for you.” Cyrus replied. “Right here.”
“Was that a joke?” Mindy laughed as she sat in Cyrus’s lap.
“It’s not time to ask the questions yet.” Cyrus snickered. “You have to play by the rules of the game.”
“Oh, I do?” Mindy breathed heavily and then kissed Cyrus. “Oh, do I.” They began to unbutton clothes.
It was about two hours later Bobby and the soldiers found where the family had come out to see what was happening. They had set up a tent.
“Hey Pa.” Bobby said to his Father. “Me and these soldiers are looking for two men they call pilots.”
“How’s Cyrus?” Colonel Mereweather asked.
“Cyrus, he is married and in the house with his bride right now.” Bobby answered.
“Married? To whom?” Ma asked.
“A real pretty woman named Mindy.” Bobby answered.
“Oh.” Pa said, “We’ll have to go over and see them tomorrow. Those are soldiers? I have never seen soldiers like that. But then…I never saw whatever that was that exploded over here or the likes of the two men we have in the tent either.”
“They’re alive?” The Sergeant asked.
“Alive but hurt. Not too bad but we had a hell of a time figuring out how to get them out of those strange chairs they were in. How did they get those chairs out here anyways?”
“It’s been a strange couple of days.” Ma said.
“Been strange, for sure.” Pa answered.
“Yes it has.” Bobby said.
“Can we see them?” The Sergeant asked the Mereweathers.
“Why sure, Ma show the boys?” Pa asked.
“Follow me.” Ma said as she went into the tent. “I’ve tended worse breaking horses.”
