"Mr. President, our two independent observers are dead. We sent in a team to recover their notes and observations. We have recovered their computers and notes but the only things we have been able to read up until this point is their paper journals. Apparently, they were able to communicate with the Vortex in several different ancient languages."

"Is there anything that we do not already know?" The President asked.

"One thing we did not know is that they believed the Vortex comes from either space or from another dimension. They witnessed several UFO events, including the launch of a very large craft northwest of their position from the ground which accelerated without noise and traveled on a straight vector into outer space. They thought it to be about as large as an aircraft carrier. That happened on August 28th, 2010 at 00:30:00 hundred hours. The second thing that we learned is that what they called 'probes' can be produced and sent out for various tasks. The probes appear as whirlwinds and they noted that the probes can dig in the dirt, send out EMP blasts, disassemble mechanical things, and communicate with human beings. They also thought the probes gathered materials and that certain probes, the larger ones, could become new vortexes. That they would find a place to anchor and once they did, that is where they stayed and grew into a full sized equivalent of the Mother Vortex."

"So, they are a weapons system of some sort?" The Secretary of Defense asked.

"They can be." General Crook answered.

"Perhaps we should try to send in a team up to the Mother Vortex and communicate with it to find out what it wants?" The President suggested.

A round of discussion ensued among everyone at the table. This lasted several minutes. The conference halted for a moment and the President asked a question, "General Crook, has there been any change in the area which is now under the control of these things, is it still in the year 1856?"

General Crook switched the view screen to satellite view, "It is hard to tell where the boundaries are on this thing but it seems to have control over the same amount of area. Our troops stationed on the edges of this highway report that where the highway ends does seem to move by about twenty feet."

"So the boundaries of the affected area fluctuates?" Ash Cater, the Secretary of Defense, asked.

"It appears so." General Crook replied.

There was a knock at the door. A messenger arrived with the latest intelligence reports, handed them to General Crook.

"We have some new information. First, both the pilots from the downed F-16's and the rescue team are experiencing some sort of illness that cannot be identified. They seem to be slowly becoming insubstantial, like ghosts.

'Second, roving units have found that though we cannot see the power lines from our reconnaissance satellites, there is a tunnel leading to the Mother Vortex where the time is 2012. The Mother Vortex is still consuming power from the power lines. It is feeding off at least one Gigawatt."

A new round of discussion broke out among everyone at the table.

"The joint chiefs recommend we fire a missile down this tunnel in time and blast the thing." The Joint Chief of Staff said.

"We should immediately cut the power to the thing Mr. President before we do anything else," Ash Carter urged.

"I agree, first we cut the power and see what happens." The President ordered, "This will be done immediately."

"Agreed," Everyone responded.

"As for the missile attack, let's have units primed and ready for assaults from several different weapons systems both ground and air." The President ordered.

"Is there any other intelligence General Crook?" The President asked.

"There is, local people in the nearby towns have begun killing each other. There have been four mass murder suicides in the surrounding towns in the last three days. The very last note by our independent observers says that observer two was screaming just before death that ‘It was in her head’.

'Some sort of aerial disturbance occurred over the Weeks Ranch where a bright light appeared that was viewed by our reconnaissance satellites from space. Here are the photographs." General Crook flipped through the new photographs, "Starting at 18:00:00 hours, this light appeared and grew in size to 350 meters. When it disappeared at 18:45:00, everything appeared normal. The occupants of the house were not seen but you can see, under infrared, the cattle and horses are out in the corral and seem to be unaffected. The house appears intact as well as all the other small sheds and barns."

"Can we check on those people and find out if they are still alive, or if they have gathered some sort of information?" The President asked.

"Consider it done," the Joint Chief said.

A messenger knocked on the door. He entered and handed the message to General Crook and left.

"All power has been cut and all electrical power generation systems within the area are turned off." General Crook read the message. "Should we switch to live reconnaissance satellite?"

"Do it." The President said. "Are the units ready to fire if given the order?" The President asked the Joint Chief.

"We have every type of asset in position to fire on your order, Mr. President, here is the list." He handed a copy to the President.

Another messenger knocked on the door and delivered intelligence reports to General Crook.

"It seems that incidents of what they thought were ghosts but were actually disruptions in the time continuum have occurred since 2008 have been found in the independent observers notes. They observed mounted cavalry patrols, pony express riders, stage coaches filled with passengers, a ghost town reappeared for about an hour, and various Native American Indian tribes unknown moved through the area. There were Spaniard conquistador units, a medicine man that reappeared frequently, and some ancient civilization which appeared to be Norse which was destroyed completely."

"This thing is not limited to the time period of 1856 then," The President asked.

"Apparently not," General Crook answered.

"Look," Ash Carter said, "The dam, plant, highway, and several things are reappearing."

"I think we all can conclude this thing, the Mother Vortex, appears to be dependent upon our electrical power." The President said.

A round of discussions broke out as to the next step that should be taken now that the whole area returned to the year 2012.

"Don't advance any further." Cyrus Weeks yelled to the soldiers. They stopped. "A being named Rephael showed up last night and said anyone who crossed the barrier between our times and stayed too long or went back and forth would die horribly. He should be returning soon. Perhaps you can wait and talk to him, he said he would be back around night fall and I am waiting for him."

"Roger that." A Colonel yelled back. "We will wait right here to see what happens..."

As the Colonel spoke, Cyrus began to see him and the Jeep and everything else fade. The road began to advance replacing the two tracks and as the road reached the Colonel and his men, they disappeared. The road continued to lengthen to the east replacing the tracks, Cyrus said to himself,

"I think I am back in 1856."
