Equality begins with appreciation - completely independent of role models

Equality begins with appreciation - completely independent of role models

Women have long fought for emancipation. They are not satisfied yet. Lately, it seems as if the traditional role models of money-making man and woman throwing household and kitchen, again solidify. Is emancipation on the backseat?

By definition, emancipation is the liberation from dependency, oppression, and deprivation to a state of self-determination. If you look at our society today, this step seems to have succeeded. Women today have every opportunity, at least theoretically. Factual constraints and necessities, however, still often lead to well-proven role models being lived.

The emancipation is long outdated!

This opinion is at least the former Family Minister Kristina Schröder and instead advocates for childcare - also known as stove premium. And maybe she's right about that. After all, the strength and independence of a woman is no longer defined only by how independent she is financially and emotionally from the "strong" gender. Equality is defined differently today than it was 25 years ago. It's less about roles than about mutual appreciation. Every part of the family fulfills its tasks - whether or not they are divided into specific men or women, is meanwhile indifferent to most women and men.

What is more valuable?

Even if the emancipation is completed and women are only entangled in self-chosen dependencies, the image of society has not yet fully adapted to modern conditions. Too deeply anchored is the centuries-old idea of the superiority of the man and his duties. A father who works hard to feed his family is therefore often still rated higher than his wife, who organizes the household and the children and at the same time contributes to society through volunteer work. However, this weighting does not only have something to do with emancipation and social image, but is also a by-product of capitalism: Only those who perform in the form of hard currency fulfill the requirements and are truly a full member of society.

What appreciation has to do with equal rights

Genuine equality has not only been missing for a long time. Men do not really have the same rights as women. Although they were for a long time purely in terms of strength and economically clearly in the advantage, but they were denied the right to show weak and vulnerable. Fortunately, today's borders are blurring more and more. Men may be weak, women may show strength. Contemptuous comments or puzzled glances - for example, in the face of a devoted houseman - come up again and again, but are increasingly out of focus and will gradually disappear completely. Change takes time; this applies to emancipation as well as to many other social developments and restructurings.

It depends on your own emancipation!

The measure of equality today ultimately applies to oneself. The social possibilities are given, disadvantages are still present, but marginal and surmountable. Men and women, however, still like to stand in their own way: the man who is afraid of the comments of his friends and colleagues if he decides to be a houseman for a year; the woman who is afraid of the raven nut's reputation when she returns to work after six months, leaving the household and childcare to the husband.

Today, equality more than ever belongs to self-responsible action and will continue to progress as people find the courage to leave old traditions behind and to break new ground. By giving our children the courage and the courage to leave their tracks, we are ensuring that a new generation is growing up that does not need to worry about topics such as emancipation, equality and appreciation.
