The three cardinal sins on Steemit.steemCreated with Sketch.

How to be unfollowed.

There are actually lots of ways to become less popular on Steemit and these are just three of my favourites.

The one that everyone else usually freaks out about is plagiarism, and certainly that is a big no-no. But I don’t usually see any of that because I generally only look at posts on my timeline, and nobody that I follow ever does that.

Actually I did do a search yesterday for a specific subject and ended up seeing a post that was copied word for word from somebody else’s blog. But I knew it was copied straight away because Cheetah bot posted a link to the original, so although the content was what I was looking for I didn’t upvote it and I went straight to the original blog.

The person who posted it on Steemit had 15 followers and $3 in his wallet, so constantly copying things onto Steemit wasn’t working that well for him.

We all have different things we take mortal offence about, both on Steemit and in life generally, and I’m no different. Sometimes I get all agitated and let my ego jump up and down squawking like a rabid parrot over trivial crap just like most people.

Without further ado, here is what adolf666 (my ego) deems verboten on Steemit:

Uploading posts without any images

I have a fetish for posting images and even post an image all my comments. And my posts usually contain at least five images. So if a post turns up on my feed without a single image to even serve as a thumbnail, I’m appalled, gob smacked, and self-righteously indignant.

And if it has been resteemed by someone I follow (that is how I usually end up seeing the bloody things on my feed), it’s safe to say they are in my bad books for the day, and I want to violently spank them.

Doing clueless posts about any subjects that wind me up

I can handle differences of opinion on many things. But if anyone goes full retard on my arse, I can get a bit psycho. The sort of thing that pushes me over the edge are opinions like water fluoridation is good for you, 911 wasn’t an inside job, or Hillary Clinton is honest and worthy.

Thankfully I don’t often see that sort of stuff on Steemit, and because I do my best to avoid arguing with people online (the Eckhart Tolle audios have slowly helped), I won’t say anything, but it certainly could curtail any further following.

Resteeming heaps of stuff

My own very rough rule of thumb, is that I only follow people who post more content than they resteem, and a total of five posts and resteems combined each day is about the most I like to see.

I make exceptions, but not many because I want to choose what I see on my timeline and not be overwhelmed by anyone else's choices.

We are all different, I like simplicity, space, and an interesting timeline

Three strikes and you are out

Basically if you do any of those things too frequently I will probably unfollow you. If I’ve been following you for ages I’ll be more lenient because everyone makes ball ups occasionally.

Even Led Zeppelin put out a really crap album once. It was called “Coda” and it was appalling. But they are still the greatest band of all time.

If you are new on the other hand, I may not be lenient at all. I could assume you are aiming to be the new Justin Bieber or Alex Jones of Steemit and drop you like a hot potato.

So if you have only been on Steemit for about a month, and I’ve been following you for about a week, consider yourself on probation. If you put out a new album about Hilary Clinton or start endorsing low-fat diets, you are so history.

How to see who loves and hates you

Go to this site – Steem Followers and you can watch as the world follows and unfollows you!

I suspect that a lot of anal obsessives are watching who follows and unfollows them and checking out their posts. Of course I would never be that anal myself, I’m just doing research for this post.

Something I’ve observed with interest is that while @kiwideb now gets about 10 new people following her each day, I seem to get about seven new follows, but along with those I also get about three unfollows. So she gains 10 followers, and I only gain four. “Why do they hate me?” my inner parrot squawks.

Why do people keep unfollowing me?

OK that’s enough about you, time to discus my imperfections…

I’m a conspiracy theorist.

For anyone who believes what the mainstream media is telling them, I am one of those people best fully blocked out with plenty of TV and a big fizzy drink made from sugar and fluoridated water.

I could be a Satan worshipper

@sift666 is my Steemit alias, As 666 is the number following 665 and preceding 667, and I’m using the number here on my Steemit account, it might mean I’m a worshiper of Satan. Or it could indicate that I have troll tendencies I need to work out with myself.

I’m really offensive

Not only do frequently mock America, I also go on about controversial stuff, and I even have a whopping great page about porn...

I post too many images

Some people have all sorts of issues with images on Steemit. I have no issues other than wanting to see more of them. I post my own pictures, other peoples, anything that catches my eye really. Sometimes with credits, and sometimes without.

Photos and pictures labeled @sift666, www.sift.co.nz or www.frot.co.nz are my own creations, while pictures with no credits are sometimes ones I found in my image collection and have no idea where they originally came from, or might be my own photos that I haven't put a signature on.

Otherwise, due to pressure to conform, I usually have a crack at including an image credit beneath each picture I copy off the internet. I do have opinions on this subject, but am practicing putting a sock in it.

I’m totally random and don’t stick to one subject or style of post

This is the big one I suspect. Maybe someone sees one of my “Steemit is wisdom and love” posts and starts following me. Then next week they see an “Everything the mainstream media tells you is bullshit” post and they get all confused.

I'm all over the place and my interests include photography, conspiracies , web design, writing, nutrition, cryptocurrencies, New Zealand, art, design, philosophy, technology, anarchy, health, computers, humour/humor, gratuitous arse shots, and anything that makes my eyes bulge while I make squeaking sounds (except torture).

What am I going to post about next? I don’t know myself, I do have a list with over 250 Steemit post ideas, but it depends entirely on which one I wake up with all pre-written in my head.

Am I just joking? Again, I haven’t got a clue, the more I attempt to be serious, the more people will probably think I’m taking the piss. I’m unlikely to take my clothes off, paint myself blue, and start juggling guinea pigs. But I might, and if I do I’ll post NSFW photos of myself.

If you seek predictability, I am not your Steemian. But there will hopefully be lots more pictures, and I promise never to agree with anything you just saw on TV.

And now after all that squawking I have this overwhelming urge to post a picture of a parrot:

Sort:

I can see you didn't plagiarize the content... and all the pics probably make it error prone to post.

Sometimes I will go find something I posted years ago elsewhere, and then post it here. I consider that fair; Steemit did not exist when I first posted it to the internet at large (USENET) 20 years ago. If it had, I would have just posted it to Steemit (if I was aware of it).

Consider yourself followed.

I often see people think that content they owned and posted "years ago" is perfectly okay to recycle it through steemit.

There is THREE big problems with it:

  • A lot of people have posted things years ago. If we all start recycling old content from the internet together, we end up making steemit nothing more than a recycle bin with lots of old content

  • Google doesn't like to see duplicate content and will penalize a site for it over time. There was a company that use to "recycle and repackage" old internet content, called about.com and google actually blacklisted them at one point if I remember correctly (it was in the news)

  • Also curators and bots go looking for duplicate content, and could downvote you.

It's not about plagiarism. It's about "new, unique, fresh content" only available on steemit.

In my earlier days I wrote over 600 blog posts under my real name. Should I just dump them all here just to get paid? Nah, I decided to write new unique content that takes my viewers comments into consideration of what they're looking for... it works a lot better to talk to them, then AT them from historical content I wrote long ago in a different year, for a different reason.

Thanks - believe it or not I've done posts with a truck load more images than this one, with no problems - but this post did stuff I've never seen in 10 months of posting on Steemit.

Now I'm thinking of doing a post about how to back up posts as you go to prevent having to do them twice like I just did with this one.

I agree about it being all cool to repost your own content. But now after reading that comment by @intelliguy I'm thinking it needs to be done with great discretion, although we can't keep coming up with stuff we have never posted before, because anyone who has been posing stuff for 20 years has said everyting in their head at some point.

So I will modify that to it's cool to post new edits of stuff you have said before.

After a week I often copy my Steemit posts to my blog, and then google do all sorts of stuff - for example they hide conspiracy stuff and promote anything against Donald Trump, because they are working for jacob rotchild I guess

http://www.frot.co.nz/design/blog/

Haha! "Squawking like a rabid parrot." :) Teeheehee.

It's your randomness of posting, your hilarious and sometimes horrifying images (and your dedication to them), and your beautiful conspiracy theorist tendencies that have always made you a must-follow for me.

I've been random with my posts, too, but I just came up with an editorial calendar to post a certain topic each day of the week. That way, I can write about all the things that interest me most, in an organized way. And I, like you, have a rather long list of article ideas written down to be placed into my topic categories.

Also, because of you, I am seriously tempted to start a porn channel of my own. You think anyone would upvote NSF naked pictures of me, or the vintage erotica I like? Lol! My husband has a zillion naked pictures of me he's taken over the years. May as well make some money off of them, right?

Oh, and like you, I am NOT a fan of re-steeming, because it messes up my newsfeed. Every now and then I find a cool new article and someone to follow because of it, but mostly, I just scroll through the re-steemed articles looking for an original one by someone I follow, because I follow people because I actually want to read what THEY write.

OK, off my soapbox for the time being. To me, you are a Steemit national treasure. :) Never change.

Many thanks, that's the best comment I've ever had :)

You must be quite a typist, if I wrote all that I'd add 10 pictures and call it "Naked photos of a rabid parrot" (NSFW)

I would totally read that article, too. :)

Idea #251...

Haha! I will be looking for this article with much anticipation. I'm sure it will be epic. :)

I had a few problems uploading this post - It got deleted the first time, and then there were about 30 geek code comments on it straight away, but they went away after I flagged them.

Freaking out that it was about to disappear for the second time, I posted it with a bunch of editing still needed, and then fixed it up.

Hopefully it's all sorted now, but please let me know if any of it is still buggered up.

I gave myself a massive 74 cent upvote on this comment in the hope of getting it above all the geek comments, before I thought of flagging them! (not because I'm trying to stiff you guys on the comment payouts)

i love it

@sift666 We should meet IRL. If for no other reason, just because I can walk to your house. I have a feeling we might get along.

Cool it would be great to meet up - we live opposite the mosque and work from home

http://www.naturefoods.co.nz/

At the very minimum, you brought some of these things front and center... more people should include some of these things in their #introduceyourself post I think... Not only what you like, but also what you dislike is equally important.

Images take time. Sometimes longer than writing the post in some case. Often I get tired from writing out along post, and I just want to stretch and go out for a walk. Sometimes I do... but I always take the time to hunt, edit and post my images....

+1 for the "no images" thing. I hate that too.

I'm sure I can post a thousand images in the time it takes me to type a word...

Dude, I should unfollow you! You are:

  • a conspiracy theorist
  • you have rotten teeth
  • you want Hillary for prison
  • I'm resteeming way too much because I think others write it better than I do.

Oh and I hate

  • stupid useless images

LOL sorry couldn't resist :)

You're totally right except maybe for the images. I really frown upon useless images allthough I have the feeling it makes posts easier to read. And I love the "meme the news" - guy

Because I didn't drink any fluoride my teeth are a bit rough - but lots of coca cola has helped :)

facepalm :D

Thanks for sharing about this. Always interesting to learn more about what's going on on SteemitI love the transparency bro, keep it up.

The internet is full of bullshit, be you and your followers and friends will be real. Reason why sites this will boom and Facebook, insta, twitter will flood out with all the fake crap.

This guy's right up my alley, oops... i'd better lock the door. I like your writing style brosef! Consider yourself followed.

I like your post, let's make steemit better community :)

I'm leaving this comment until last because I don't know if it's for real or not.

OK I'll give you the benefit of the doubt after checking out your posts, and give constructive criticism and a small upvote:

When you comment it has to look like you have actually read the post. This new post by @nonameslefttouse explains it very well:
https://steemit.com/life/@nonameslefttouse/you-there-how-would-you-like-to-buy-my-flag

After your replie, I got in doubt should i answer or not because i don't want to spam.
I thought "let's make this comment short and sweet like alcohol shot" but I was wrong. I read both posts, and I catch your point. What I really wanted to say, thank you for your constructive criticism, it means a lot. Belive me, it means more than any upvote. Famous quote "Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."

I will be waiting for your next kickass posts, and my next comment won't disapoint you, I promise.

Brilliant - now that's a reply - keep doing ones like that and you will go far on Steemit!
