Random Japan #30 :: Kill it with fire!

in #randomjapan6 years ago

Now there's an attractive bug. Just look at him! Er... maybe not too close. They bite.

Japanese_Centipede.jpg

Ah, a mukade (ムカデ、百足), or Japanese centipede. Pretty common bugs, especially in rural areas. They are big and very aggressive. While the bite isn't poisonous enough to kill you, they say it is very very painful and will swell up quite a lot. They are territorial so if you catch them in your apartment and throw them out, they will just come back in. Scary guys. I have been warned by many Japanese people to always check my shoes in summer because they like to crawl in and rest in them at night.

Despite that, when I saw this one I got in close, took this photo, and watched him with my son as he crawled around.

Up_We_Go.jpg

Up we go! Most of the pedestrian overpasses in Japan have these bicycle ramps either right in the middle of the stairs or over to one of the sides. They are nice and make getting around by bicycle that much easier.

Walking_the_Neighborhood.jpg

A typical neighborhood view, even in larger cities. Even smaller towns often have the large sidewalks and guardrails you see here. Now there is something I'd love to see in the states! Whenever I visit my folks I am disappointed to find most streets these days have no sidewalk. As a parent, these are really important.

That's all for today, folks. Remember to like, comment, or resteem if you liked this post and check back tomorrow for another random Japan.

Hi thereDavid LaSpina is an American photographer lost in Japan, trying to capture the beauty of this country one photo at a time.
Sort:

Spent like 30 seconds looking at the second photo. Went deep thinking about time and the meaning of life. Is it true that the green lights on crosswalks are actually blue in japan? I never paid attention, but curious still.

Photo No.2 is very mesmerising, indeed. Stairway and ramp to heaven in one. Great geometry.
