Film & TV Friday: Emmys Edition
Emmy nominations have been announced. I have thoughts, of course. Let's get into it on Film & TV Friday.
The news
Emmys
As you know if you read my blog regularly, I don't watch a ton of TV, and when I do, my tastes run to the eclectic. Still, I have watched some of the works and artists nominated for the Emmys this year. Here are my random thoughts:
- I was glad to see GLOW nominated for its first season, knowing season 2 was better. But no nomination for Alison Brie is ridiculous.
- Game of Thrones leads the pack, which would have made me so happy just a few years ago, and is now received with a general sense of meh.
- In Drama, it seems that to be nominated you need to be scary, depressing, rapey, or any combination of the above.
- Killing Eve getting shut out of the big category, and only getting nominations for Actress and Writing is disappointing.
- I hope Samantha Bee and her show get all of the awards they're nominated for.
- I am here for Leah Remini's show getting a nod
- Also here Tatiana Maslani's last chance to get a second Emmy for her grounding performance in Orphan Black.
- Twin Peaks can go straight to hell.
- I would have thoughts about Patrick Melrose, but I fell asleep reading the premise.
- While I will never watch The Handmaid's Tale (too depressing by far), I support its existence and am happy for its many nominations.
- Happy for to see the Guest Star nomination for Tiffany Haddish. Her SNL hosting gig was excellent.
- Here for Brandon Victor Dixon's nomination for Jesus Christ Superstar. So good.

This Friday the 13th gets one horror themed animated comedy, and one action film with Dwayne Johnson. And amazingly, it's the horror themed animated comedy that gets the wider opening and the better reviews.

Trailers
Very, very few new trailers this week. I wonder if they're saving them for Comic-Con.
Wonder Park
Well, this just looks super charming and adorable.
The Favorite
Wait... what? This is... what? A... historical comedy about Queen Anne from the director of The Lobster? I AM SO CONFUSED.
Life Itself
This is another confusing film, as it features both beardless Oscar Isaac (aka, the hottest man on the planet) and bearded Oscar Isaac (aka, a character actor with an interesting look). Also, it's from the maker of This Is Us, so I'm guessing it's gonna be ALL about the audience tears.
Goosebumps
Fun fact: Goosebumps books were two of the first books I ever translated. Also fun fact: This is a kids horror movie that is definitely too scary for me.
Colette
This is another historical film, though more on the dramatic, nay, melodramatic side of things. It's probably not for me, but it's a solid cast.
Mary Queen of Scots
And yet another historical, this time about Mary and Elizabeth, queens, cousins, friends, and bitter enemies.
The Grinch
I am still utterly confused about the need for another Grinch movie. I like the reindeer.
