Film & TV Friday: Oscar Preview

in #entertainment6 years ago

The 90th Academy Awards are coming this Sunday, and despite a weak year of movie going for me, I have read the teal leaves and come up with some predictions.

This is Film & TV Friday.

The Top Story

It's all about the Oscars here this week. Both because it's the biggest thing, and because we're still unpacking. We've moved, but... we're also still moving.

First, take a look at the [full list of nominees(http://variety.com/2018/film/news/list-2018-oscar-nominations-1202668757/).

Now, from the bottom up, let's go:

Visual Effects: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

(It's Star Wars. I'm voting for it)

####Costume Design: Phantom Thread
(It's literally about making clothes)

Makeup and Hair: Darkest Hour

(Spoiler: they're also gonna win Best Actor)

Original Song: "Remember Me" from Coco

It's great, and it's the heart of the film.

Original Score: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

(John Williams is 86. He should get the award at every opportunity)

Production Design: The Shape of Water

(This is the award this one's getting)

Sound Mixing: Dunkirk

(War movies win this one a lot, I think)

Sound Editing: Star Wars: The Last Jedi

(It had that one super dramatic sound editing bit)

Film Editing: Dunkirk

(I hear good things)

Best Foreign Language Film: ???

Best Live Action Short Film: ???

Best Documentary Short Subject: ???

Best Documentary Feature: ???

Animated Short: ???

(I don't know)

Original Screenplay: The Big Sick

(I just really want Emily V. Gordon & Kumail Nanjiani to win an Oscar)

Adapted Screenplay: Call Me By Your Name

(Did you know James Ivory has never won an Oscar?)

Animated Feature: Coco

(I hear "The Breadwinner" is really good, but Coco is a great Pixar movie)

Director: Get Out

(Yes, this is 100% me wanting Jordan Peele to win)

Supporting Actress: Lady Bird

(Laurie Metcalf deserves this.

Supporting Actor: All the Money in the World

(Christopher Plummer gets the "stepping in for an abuser" award)

Lead Actress: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

(Frances McDormand picks up her second Oscar because she's great)

Lead Actor: Darkest Hour

(Look, I want Kaluuya to win for "Get Out," or Chalamet for "Call Me By Your Name," but the makeup department is getting Oldman this Oscar)

Best Picture: Dunkirk

(The Oscars love a war movie, and they still owe Nolan for not giving a nomination for The Dark Knight)

Wide Release Films Opening This Weekend:

Film# of Theaters
Red Sparrow3,056
Death Wish2,847

Source: BoxOfficeMojo

So... Red Sparrow is, basically, a Black Widow film, without the branding and the MCU, and with Lawrence instead of Johansson. That's weird, right?

The Original Death Wish series was super problematic, but somehow survived for 5 films and 20 years. And I guess that sounds attractive to Bruce Willis at this stage of his career, years removed from his last real hit.

Also, neither of these is beating Black Panther, now the third most successful Marvel film ever in the US after the two Avengers films.

TV Show Premieres This Week

You could call this a lean week. Or, if your anything like me, you could already be clearing your schedule to binge the second season of Jessica Jones.

Trailers

A fairly lean week of trailers. Let's see what we got.

Ready Player One

How many trailers is this film gonna get?

Thoroughbreds

Damn, this looks like a dark, dark, DARK comedy. And kinda feels like a 90s movie. There's definitely some cult classic potential here.

Unsane

And speaking of dark, Claire "The Queen" Foy is either sane or insane, stalked or imagining things, in this dark Soderberg film. This looks like one of those not so fun Soderberg movies. Unless you dig psychological horror.

Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2

I loved Wreck it Ralph. Of course I did. I'm the target audience. This looks fun, and I am here for it!

And that's all I got. What are your Oscar picks? Are you as hyped about Jessica Jones as I am?

I don't really follow the Oscars, but I REALLY hope Christopher Plummer wins. He is due an Oscar, in my opinion, and he deserves it.
