Film & TV Friday: O Solo Mio

in #news6 years ago

Sometimes it feels like the only two franchises left are Star Wars and Marvel. So, after two Marvel movies in a row, here comes the SW film. Solo is the only US wide release this weekend, and it's going out on a whole bunch of markets worldwide. We've also got some #metoo stuff to cover, related both to an arrest and Arrested development. So let's talk about that and about some other film and TV stuff on Film & TV Friday.

The News

Arrested Apologies

Following the highly criticized group interview given by the cast of the returning Arrested Development, both David Cross and Jason Bateman have apologized. I am glad to see it, but I don't consider it enough. This thing, of coddling the abuser on his comeback trail, exacerbated by the victim, as Bateman put it, being right there, is a symptom of a systemic issue that society has only begun to reckon with. It led to Bateman mansplaining how the industry works to Jessica Walter, a legend who has been doing this since before he was born. I'm not an Arrested Development fan. It was always a bit too mean for me, though I appreciate the talents involved. So me saying I won't be watching the new season is not quite the impactful boycott. I won't, though. Wasn't going to before this happened.

Weinstein Arrest

Harvey Weinstein was arrested, charged with rape in the first degree, rape in the third degree and a criminal sexual act in the first degree, and then released on bail with electronic monitoring after surrendering his passport. About damn time.

Mangold to Direct Boba Fett

So, here's my unpopular opinion: Boba Fett sucks. The guy had mere minutes of screentime in the original trilogy, but has been built up to be this ultimate badass. His armor led to the entire mythology of the Mandalorians (for which I'm grateful because it gave us the incomparable Sabine Wren). But he's not a character. He's a quiet sketch in armor on which fans have projected so very much. That said, following Logan, if anyone can give us a good Boba Fett movie, it may be James Mangold, and it looks like he's going to get the chance to do just that.

Obamas To Stream

US Presidents of the past got to shape their legacy after leaving office through their Presidential Library. The Obamas will have that, of course. But also? It looks like they're gonna get to make whatever content they want for Netflix. Which... I mean... they're not TV people, but they do have a good eye for art and entertainment, so who knows. We'll see the first fruits of this collaboration in 2019 at the earliest, so... wait and see, I guess.

Trailers

Shock and Awe

Oh, Oliver Stone. You're just Oliver Stroning all over the damn place, aren't you?

City of Lies

Didn't we just have this exact story as a mini series on the USA network, but without gd Johnny Depp?

Mowgli

Oh, look. It's Grimdark Jungle Book.

Papillon

I'd call this Grimdark Papillon, but it's not like the Steve McQueen film was all sunshine and light, right? Still, though. Who asked for this?

Down A Dark Hall

Well, this is way too scary for me.

Damsel

Well, that looks like a super odd western, huh? Like, super odd.

Wildlife

Paul Dano is a brilliant, enigmatic actor. His directorial debut seems... intriguing. I mean, it's probably a good movie. But for all my love for Carey Mulligan, I don't think I'll watch it.

Skyscraper

It's The Towering Inferno meets Die Hard with The Rock. But is it any good? It doesn't look very good, does it?

Hotel Artemis (Red Band trailer)

I... think this may be awesome?

The Sisters Brothers

This is the second western, and second Jake Gyllenhaal film this week, and it actually looks pretty awesome. Except I don't watch Joaquin Phoenix films.

Sicario 2

It's another Sicario movie. Sicario is a franchise now?

Upgrade

I think this is the second trailer I've had of this film here, and I still don't quite know what to make of it.
