Film & TV Friday: RIP Harlan
Comicbook movies are making news this week, as is Showtime. But the headline is the passing of author, editor, and screenwriter Harlan Ellison. This is Film & TV Friday.
The news
RIP Harlan Ellison
Possibly best known as the writer of groundbreaking Star Trek episode "The City At The Edge Of Forever," Harlan Ellison was also one of the greatest short fiction writers and editors in the history of science fiction. For many years, he was a hugely important figure in sff and for me, personally. However, I cannot eulogize the writer without mentioning the man. Ellison was cantankerous, physically and verbally violent, and actually groped fellow author Connie Willis on the stage at the 2006 Hugo awards. His passing is a moment of mixed feelings for me, to say the least. But in the spirit of kindness, let us remember stories such as "'Repent, Harlequin', Said The TickTockMan," "Jeffty is Five," and "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream."
Showtime for Master Chief
Showtime has ordered ten episode of a live action series based on the Halo games. Kyle Killen, writer of well reviewed and badly rated shows Awake and Lone Star. will be the showrunner.
Leto Vamp
The news that Jared Leto will star in Morbius, the Living Vampire is almost too perfect. Leto's whole "I am grimdark" shtick is terrible, and I hate it. And Sony's decision to make a Morbius movie is terrible and I kinda love it. I currently plan on mostly ignoring this.
DC Universe First Look
DC/Warner has released a trailer for their upcoming digital subscription service, dcuniverse.com, which will feature original content - animated and live action shows - as well as movies and comics. If every decision they've made in the last 10 years or so hadn't turned me off them so much, I might be into this.

Slim pickings this week. Very interesting and heartening to see an original Indian show, created by Indians and set in India, get the full Netflix treatment. The Netflix international push has been fascinating.
Trailers
This week brings mostly horror trailers, some of which aren't even meant to be horror trailers.
The Hate U Give
This adaptation of Angie Thomas' extremely successful and timely YA novel looks powerful, and I suspect will be a big deal.
The Equalizer 2
Still confused that The Equalizer is getting a sequel. I guess Denzel enjoys playing the character? What Denzel wants, Denzel gets, as it should be.
The Predator
I'm starting to feel more and more positive about this film. Which is an odd feeling.
King of Thieves
When you take about half of the older British actors and put them in a caper movie, of course I'm intrigued. But damn, this film seems super male and super white.
Zoe
This looks like an Android drama/romance... but I'm thinking there's a twist.
Beautiful Boy
Well, this sure looks like a depressing drama that is super depressing.
Assassination Nation
Is this terrible? Is this great? What even is this? Maybe a full trailer will shed some light, as this is just a teaser.
The House with a Clock in its Walls
Still a hard pass on the concept of an Eli Roth horror film for kids.
Mile 22
When you've got someone who looks like a good guy saying "our team is engaged in a higher form of patriotism," I'm gonna sideeye you.
