Film & TV Friday: Discovery Shakeup

in #news6 years ago

Two Star Trek show runners leave, one enters. I am worried. This is Film & TV Friday.

The Discovery News

In a post on The Hollywood Reporter yesterday, we learned that Star Trek: Discovery showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts have been fired from the show, with Kurtzman stepping in. I didn't have a blog here when season 1 was running, which is why y'all probably don't know how much I loved season 1. It was daring and bold, and it was a serious examination of the values of Starfleet. Berg and Harberts have been fired due to budget overruns, and possibly also staff mistreatment.

Now, if the rumors of staff mistreatment are true, fuck'em. Goodbye. If those rumors have been spread to make the departure more palatable to fans, however, I am worried. Berg and Harberts were picked by original showrunner Bryan Fuller, and they shared his vision for the show. While Kurtsman's production company was always generally in charge, and he has always had a "created by" credit, he is a writer I do not trust. I loved Fringe, but the writing was riddled with issues. I do not love the Trek films he wrote. So, yeah. Worried.

On the bright side, the worst screenwriter to ever win a writing Oscar, Akiva Goldsman, who apparently was Kurtsman's guy in the writer's room, is also out. So that's something.

The show is due to return in 2019.

With all due respect to Tag - which seems like a fun, odd film, based on a real story - this weekend is all about one film, the long awaited sequel to one of Pixar's biggest films ever. Looking at the reviews, this one looks closer to Toy Story 2 than Cars 2. That's a very good thing.

I have a theory on why Luke Cage won't follow the previous Marvel Netflix second seasons in sucking. I may have shared it here already. Here it is: The second half of season already was the crappy second season, and now we can proceed to the awesome.

Trailers

This week brings mostly horror trailers, some of which aren't even meant to be horror trailers.

Siberia

After killing the entire Russian mob in John Wick, ageless vampire Keanu Reeves is sent by what appears to be the Russian mob to Siberia. They will try to kill him. He will probably win. Because he's Keanu.

Halloween

Jamie Lee Curtis, the original Final Girl of horror, is back as the potential final grandma in this sequel to the original Halloween film.

First Man

Ryan Gosling is Neil Armstrong in a film about going to the moon from La La Land and Whiplash director Damien Chazelle. Intriguing!

The Little Stranger

Domhnall Gleeson's wispy mustache is, apparently, not the real horror in this well cast gothic horror adaptation.

The Nun

This is a spinoff of The Conjuring series.

Dumbo

I'm gonna put "live action Dumbo directed by Tim Burton' on the list of horror films for this week. Yup.

The Grinch

I continue to be confused as to why we need a new Grinch movie, but this look kinda cute?

Unfriended: Dark Web

Well, this sure looks like morally repugnant fear mongering, huh?
