Film & TV Friday: Star Wars Wars
It's all about Star Wars this week, with fan shenanigans and possible future film cancellations. Let's get into it on Film & TV Friday
The Last Remake
Star Wars "fans" have "pledged" to give over 85 million dollars to remake Star Wars: The Last Jedi, in a way that will, I presume, center white dudes more? Make Rey a Skywalker? Hurt fewer broflake feelings? "The goal," they write, "is to not make one half of the fandom happy over the other, it is to make a film that the fandom in general as a whole enjoys."
That is, of course, impossible. Backlash to SW films has been a thing since Empire ("too dark!"), following up with Jedi ("the Ewoks were too cute!") and then... well. The prequels. Which were varying degrees of actual crap. But, hey! They were crap about a white dude, so I guess that's fine?
I write "pledged" in quotes, because this ain't a pledge. No financial information was given. This is an entirely empty gesture. When the $10,000 level costs as much as the $10 level (ie, nothing), what does any of it mean? 85 million could be 8,500 people. Or one dude with a bunch of fake emails. This is bullshit, but everybody's covering, so I figured I'd call it out here.
Solo Impact
It's been reported this week that following Solo's flop performance, the Boba Fett and Obi-Wan films may have been put on hold. In response, Lucas/Disney has said "no, we still have multiple films in the pipeline!" Now, I don't want to denigrate my former colleagues in the press, but this is not a denial of the original report. The Rian Johnson trilogy is still happening, as is Episode 9. Those are, indeed, multiple films.
Are the Fett and Kenobi films cancelled? I'd bet they're thinking about it. And I hope they do. Put the money and effort into giving us new stuff, please. There's so much left to explore in this universe.

So this is really another single film weekend, with dinosaurs taking over the earth and all cinemas. I can't believe this one will duplicate its predecessor's massive success, though. So we'll see how that goes.

Trailers
This week brings mostly horror trailers, some of which aren't even meant to be horror trailers.
Little Women
Do we need a modern day Little Women remake? How would that even work?
Nobody's Fool
This comedy seems to rely 100% on Tiffany Haddish's charisma and funny. Which, well, is not a bad idea.
Creed II
The cast is back. Coogler isn't. The first thing's great. The second is making me very, very nervous about this sequel.
Welcome to Marwen
This looks incredible. It's been a long time since I cared about a Zemeckis film, but I am here for this. In a huge way.
Leave No Trace
This is incredibly well reviewed and making a killing on the festival circuit. And I'm sure it's an affecting, effective drama.
