Movie Review: Us
Hey My J's and movie fans
Just when you thought it was safe to head back to your local cinema thinking it will be a few more months before horror movies rear its head we get Pet Cemetary and Us in quick succession.
While the former is a reboot of the much-loved cult classic the latter, is an original screen production by the funny man Jordon Peele, as a follow up to his pretty successful "Get Out" which honestly still gives me the creeps whenever dating a white girl and her asking me to meet her parents, no please don't send me to the sunken place.
So what has Mr Peele cooked up for us this time? Well, the movie is called "Us", and it's pretty freaky if you ask me. Want to know more? Let's dive in, shall we?
What is Us about?
To get away from their busy lives, the Wilson family takes a vacation to Santa Cruz, California with the plan of spending time with their friends, the Tyler family.
Accompanied by her husband, son and daughter, Adelaide Wilson returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child.
Haunted by a traumatic experience from the past, Adelaide grows increasingly concerned that something bad is going to happen.
Her worst fears soon become a reality when four masked strangers descend upon the house, forcing the Wilsons into a fight for survival. What makes this break in a twist is that the family finds out that the intruders look like them, only with grotesque appearances.
What I thought of us?
US starts strong, introducing us to a family and teasing a sinister story coming to fruition. The visuals are stunning, great score puts you right into the mood, and there's a significant effort spent to make the characters likeable with some humour and a little character development, more than we get in most horror movies.
Until here Jordan Peele looks like his in for another slam dunk until it takes a wrong turn and falls flat on its face.
Once the action hits and the doppelgangers show up it just becomes a mess of a movie. Sometimes it's seriously dark, other times it's comedic and not to its benefit. Everything just sort of happens for the sake of suspense and a few scares on screen with no explanation and you're just along for the ride.
Acting
Nyongo puts an amazing performance as the lead. Although she plays two characters, you could swear the actors are different. She's that good. You could see every single emotion there's to exist on her facial expressions, she really shows her acting range in this film. She really outshines the rest of the cast who don't do a bad job but are nowhere near her level.
Trailer for Us
My rating for us
The story has so much promise, but the lack of logic due to plot holes especially when it comes to a Tethered's existence and motivation is very messy and ultimately ruins the conclusion of the film because it leaves too many holes in the story that needed to have answers.
It honestly feels like Jordon was stuck in two minds here, he could have gone with an in-depth back story or removed need for explanation and opted for a good old slasher film but alas it falls in between and is worse for it.
I was so disappointed by the story that by the time it came to the plot twist came around I didn't even care. I would give it 5 doppelgängers out of 10
Have your say
Have you seen "Us"? What did you think of the movie?
Holla at me in the comments! All my commenters I will now refer to as Jessie. Jessie is a good friend of mine, but Jessies got a girl, and I want to make her mine.
So have at it my Jessies! If you don't have something to comment, simply comment "I am a Jessie."
