Deadpool 2 Movie Review - 26 March 2018

in #movies6 years ago

Our favourite Foul-mouthed mutant mercenary Wade Wilson (AKA. Deadpool), but this time his not alone. Deadpool is no longer a solo act and in the sequel, he brings together a team of fellow mutant rogues to protect a young boy with supernatural abilities from the brutal, time-travelling cyborg, Cable, or so we are lead to believe. The movie picks up just a couple of years after the events of the first movie and quickly takes a turn for the worst as we set out on a journey of self-discovery.

Deadpool 2 trailer

Deadpool 2 is the sequel to the 2016 superhero film Deadpool and is Directed by David Leitch (John Wick and John Wick: Chapter 2), it is a fun and hilarious sequel to the original, thanks in part to Reynolds' lively performance, at this point, Ryan is the real embodiment of Deadpool, as Hugh was to Wolverine.

What is Deadpool 2 about?

Two years after the events of the first film, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), still going by his alter-ego "Deadpool" continues to live out his days as a mercenary travelling around killing the bad guys. One day, Deadpool is forced to form a team of superheroes known as the "X-Force" to protect a mutant kid from a dangerous futuristic time-traveller named "Cable" (Josh Brolin).

What Deadpool 2 does right

Although lacking some of the freshness of the original with quite a few of the jokes being recycled from part 1, Deadpool 2 is a worthy sequel in just about every sense. The meta-humour and fourth wall breaks still hit home when they need to and the action scenes are expertly choreographed by John Wick co-director David Leitch, taking over from Tim Miller.

Once again, there is no doubt that Ryan Reynolds was born to play Deadpool. His comic timing is perfect and even some of the character's most dramatic scenes can be taken seriously in the right context.

However, it is Josh Brolin (also amazing as Thanos) outshines the most of the characters in this movie. He nails the role of Cable and he holds his own without drawing too many comparisons to his recent performance as Thanos.

There are parts in it that are hilarious, and if you are a frequent movie-goer and up on your latest news, you will enjoy the many references and gimmicks. The movie is a laugh a minute but does balance it well with the action. The humour is so good you kind of give the amount of violence and gore a pass because of how light-hearted the dialogue is.

The new characters are welcome additions though, particularly Domino and Cable, and giving Reynolds a larger group to spark off is a good idea. I do hope that a proper "X-Force" film does come next. The action scenes are spectacular and have improved, as you might expect when switching to a director who worked on "John Wick".

Where Deadpool 2 is dead

However, what that is said, no real story is ever told. There is no real arc for the characters, even though the movie attempts to force one down on them. It feels very much like a transport into the forthcoming X-force movie, and Deadpool 2 is, in my opinion, not able to stand on its own.

I'm not sure if it's down the restrictions of copywrite or lazy writing but there is no real substance to the movie and everything that goes on seems like a platform for Ryan to show off his acting and comedy routines as Deadpool.

My rating

I give Deadpool 2 a solid 8 of 10. It is an entertaining watch and even though the plot is not worth following the movie will definatley keep you in stiches from start to finish. There are also there are some special guest appareances that if you blink you just might miss it

Note: If you haven't seen the movie be sure to stay during the credits for two hilarious bonus scenes.

Have your say

Have you seen Deadpool 1 and 2? What did you think of the movie? Are you keen for the 3rd movie?
