Movie Review: Ant-man & The Wasp

in #movies6 years ago

Hey Steemians

Its been a while since I did a movie review, well since there aren't any worth seeing lately in my opinion but I managed to check out Ant-man & The Wasp over the weekend and decided to jump right back into the move review game. As you may know, Ant-man & The Wasp (along with Hawkeye & Ms Marvel) were all missing from the mania that was Infinity War, all we heard was he was under house arrest, while the Wasp as a character has yet to be introduced in the MCU. So as Scott Lang sits out the biggest fight in the history of the Universe, what was he up to, between 2016's Civil War?

Well, his at home for one. Seems like he is literally the only Avenger to have been caught by the authorities and went along with it, such a sweet guy, he really is the ordinary guy's superhero!

Plot

Now that Scott Lang is at home with nothing to do in the naughty corner, he grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a superhero and a father, mostly his decision to engage in the fight with Captain America. While he loathes himself for his decisions but seems powerless to do anything about it but bide his time.

He is eventually approached by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym, Lang must once again don the Ant-Man suit and fight alongside the Wasp. The urgent mission soon leads to secret revelations from the past as the dynamic duo finds itself in an epic battle against a powerful, well not that powerful new enemy.

My thoughts on the movie

There isn't much depth to this movie when it comes to the storyline and you don't feel much is at stake here, honestly they could have stuffed up every single mission and the movie would have ended the exact same, or even better perhaps a cliffhanger but no, the story was wrapped up with the usual Marvel formula and packaged for general entertainment. Appart from the jokes which definitely have Paul Rudd's style to it, since he co-wrote the script is the only saving grace of this movie. While story, villain, subplots. It all falls flat. It all one-dimentional.

We have a mysterious antagonist named Ghost, but she fails in the business of being mysterious or intriguing, and at one point serves up a clot of over complicated exposition that gives the film little bit action. You don't care if she'll accomplish her goal or not. You don't even care which side is going to win and she certainly falls into the category of forgettable uninteresting Marvel villains.

The main story concerns a rescue mission with very small odds yet you could easily predict what's going to happen. It wasn't exciting at all and in some cases, It's just a burden to watch this kind of a dull plot to unfold.

While the recue mission takes centre stage we have a subplot concerning a romantic relationship between Antman and the Wasp. But there isn't much, it just teases us around but doesn't really explore it much. We have another subplot concerning a lovely relationship between a dad and a 10 years old girl, which is not very well developed but a little bit heartwarming because it's a relationship between a dad and a 10 years old girl.

I really enjoyed the first Ant-man but this one just seems like it's been done before. Disney has the strings. It got to try to be colourful, ''funny'', amiable with jokes. I really wonder when Marvel and Disney are going to take risks and make an emotional and groundbreaking superhero movie. I guess its all focused on Infinity War while the rest is all padding for the build up to the next round.

The critics and audiences will be fine with eating this stale formula that has been repackaged time and time again as the studio continues to cash in on the superhero hype train.

Final score

There isn't any climax, or depth, or emotion. It's not an 8/10 movie, nor a 1/10 movie, just a filler movie with no heart and soul, apart from introducing the Wasp it did very little in the way of developing Ant-man. If you're looking for something fun with a few laughs and some decent action to fill an evening this movie will do just that. I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Have your say

Have you seen Ant-man & the wasp? What did you think of the film? Is it a Marvel afterthought or a welcomed distraction from the insanity of Infinity War?
