Foxie on a mission - A story for children aged 7-12 - PART 17

in #fiction6 years ago (edited)

In a quiet bundle, Milo sat listening to the conversation going on not very far from him. He turned ice cold when he heard Magnus calling for him and just kept still, hoping that no one noticed where he was. He wasn't sure what was going on and he definitely didn't want to be anybody's dinner. Everything seemed so unreal. A few days ago he was a normal Jack Russell - just watching the house and being a good pet - and look at him now. Somehow, he has turned into a guide dog, a security dog, a clown dog, a magical-tree-seeing dog and a wanted dog. "No, a 'canine' dog!" he thought.

Jasper called out to him a few times, but when he didn't show himself, Foxie tried. Seconds after that, every single fox in the woods called out his name too. He either had to run away like a coward or step forward and see what Magnus wanted with him. There was nothing else for him to do.

As he stepped out from behind the tree, he could literally feel all eyes on him. His legs trembled below him but he held his head high - just like Jasper would have done if it had been him. Slowly he walked in their direction, very cautious of all the foxes around him. There was only one way for him to get to the rest and that was through the foxes. "Man, I don't like foxes!" Milo thought to himself but as he came closer, the foxes stepped to the side to make a path for him.

While walking past them, he could hear only breathing. No one said a word or even moved.

"How nice of you to join us," said Magnus as Milo took his last few steps towards them and for the first time ever, Milo felt ashamed. He could kick himself for hiding that long when it was obvious that no one wanted to cause him any harm. With a guilty smile, his ears down and his tail between his legs, he apologized for wasting their time and then lifted his paw to show his respects.

The sun had already started to set and there was a red-ish glow in the darkening sky. The smell of lavender was still strong but by then, it didn't bother anyone any longer.

"Now that we're all here, we may begin," said Magnus. He picked up his stick with both hands and with a strong force, hit it on the ground. There it was again - that same noise that they have heard earlier, now only louder and stronger. Their ears started ringing and the earth trembled so much that a crack formed in the soil.

It lasted for a few seconds before the foxes started making howling noises, just like wolves. This time, it was Foxie who started to copy them but it was when something really strange started happening to Grandma Owl that they all started questioning the purpose of the visit...
