Foxie on a mission - A story for children aged 7-12 - PART 13

in #fiction6 years ago

Foxie took a few steps forward to see what the fuss was all about. He had been watching Milo and Grandma Owl arguing over something for the last couple of minutes and he was starting to get bored. He was curious to know what was going on and the thin line of smoke intrigued him. The smell of lavender became stronger and his nostrils started to burn.

Milo and Grandma Owl did not even see or hear Foxie approaching and they were startled when he sniffed next to them.

"King Fox," Grandma Owl said. "You should not be this close. We are just..."

Foxie interrupted suddenly. "What's that in there?" he asked while covering his nose with his paw. He leaned forward and without any warning, he pushed his paw right into the hole.

Milo almost fainted and Grandma Owl nearly suffered a heart attack but they were both very relieved when Foxie's paw returned unharmed after a few seconds. With it, came a small folded paper which looked very old.

Milo grabbed the paper and proceeded to open it but because neither him nor Foxie could read, they handed it over to Grandma Owl to do the honors. The letters were small and it caused Grandma Owl to bend down until her nose almost touched the paper for her to see what it said.

She cleared her throat and started to read.

"The vulpes owns the crown

the canine is the clown,

strigiformes will shine,

BEWARE the feline!

Lavandula is the key,

follow it to find me!"

Grandma Owl slowly lifted her head from the letter and stared out in front of her. Milo tilted his head to the side and pulled a confused face while Foxie jumped up and started waving his tail from left to right.

"That's so cool!" Foxie exlaimed.

Milo frowned even more could not help himself. "Anyone perhaps have a dictionary with them?"

Grandma Owl looked like she didn't even hear a word any of them were saying. She was in deep thought - her mouth was moving quietly as she was repeating the words from the letter inside her head. The two boys were watching her anxiously until she broke her silence.
