Foxie on a mission - A story for children aged 7-12 - PART 15

in #fiction6 years ago

"Grandma Owl," called Foxie from below. "Wait! We can't leave now. We have to get to Magnus!"

It took her a few seconds to turn around and secure herself on a tree branch before Foxie continued talking.

"We don't know who left the letter there. It could be anyone. What if it's just meant to be something to distract us, or to lead us on the wrong path?"

Milo took a seat as if he was watching a comedy. "He has a point!" he agreed.

"You're quite right, little King," Grandma Owl said. "But I was not going anywhere other than home to get my dictionary. As you all know, I am an old lady and we are suckers for riddles." She let her head down and continued. "Oh, if only Jasper was here. He would know what to do!"

In all the ups and downs of the last few hours, everyone had forgotten about Jasper. The comment made them all to think about him and wonder what he would have done in this situation. Grandma Owl's words weren't even cold yet, when a big voice startled them.

"Did I just hear my name?"

It was Jasper!

They were all very relieved to see him and could not stop smiling. He came at just the right time and they could not wait to tell him about their day and all that has happened so far.

"What are you doing here, Jasp?" asked Milo.

"I had a feeling that you needed a little guidance, that's all," said Jasper jokingly. He would never admit to them that he was worried about them and felt sad about losing out on all the action, but he was really glad that he did go out to look for them seeing as they were in a very sticky situation. He listened to them making turns about the tree and the singing, the log and the thunder, the lavender and the riddle and lastly, about Grandma Owl's decision to head back home to fetch her dictionary.

"Well, King Fox, it sounds like you've got your head screwed on right after all," said Jasper. "It was a good decision not to go that way as I believe the best would be to go forward. It will be dark soon and the three of you haven't gotten very far today. Show me the riddle. Let's see if I can help with something."

They walked back to the incense stick and Grandma Owl came flying down to do the reading. As she read the riddle again, Jasper closed his eyes and listened carefully:

"The vulpes owns the crown

the canine is the clown,

strigiformes will shine,

BEWARE the feline!

Lavandula is the key,

follow it to find me!"

"I just can't put my finger on it all," said Grandma Owl. "I know that canine means dog and we've already figured that it must be Milo. A feline is a cat - so we have to be on the lookout for a cat. And lavandula is the word for lavender, which I suppose we should follow to find whoever 'me' is."

"Hmmm," replied Jasper. "There's only one clown around here and that ain't me." With a satisfying look on his face, he smiled at Milo who was just pulling a silly face, making it obvious that he knew what they were referring to.

"I'm not quite sure about the word 'vulpes' but if it wears a crown, then it's probably referring to King Fox, don't you think Grandma Owl?" asked Jasper.

"Uh huh, yes, that makes sense," agreed Grandma Owl.

"But this one," said Jasper as he pointed with his nose to the word 'strigiformes'. "No clue! Could it be diamonds? Or water that shines?"

"Speaking about water," Milo chipped in. "I'm going to see if I can find something to drink around here seeing as Jasper is here to take over my duties for a few seconds. Anyone care to join me?"

They all shook their heads to decline and watched as Milo disappeared behind the tall grass.
