Foxie on a mission - A story for children aged 7-12 - PART 5

in #fiction6 years ago

Poor Foxie was indeed very thirsty and when Jasper offered him some dry dog food, he couldn't resist and when his tummy was full and his thirst was quenched, he followed Jasper to a quiet and cool spot in the shadow of a tool shed. Milo followed and settled himself in at the other side of the shed, about two metres away from them but the best spot to see both the front and back side of the cabin.

For a while it was quiet and although they all had questions burning inside of them, they lay still and in absolute silence. The only things that moved were their eyes. Blink after blink, the one looked at the other and when it looked like Jasper's eyes were taking a bit too long to continue a full blink, Milo had to make a plan to keep him from falling asleep because that would leave an awkward silence between him and the fox.

"Okay, enough!" Milo broke the silence. "I can't take it anymore. Just ask him already!"

Jasper opened his one eye and gave Milo the stink eye before closing it again. He had learned a long time ago that Milo's mouth works faster than his brain and that sometimes, it's easier to just ignore him than to pour fuel over the fire.

Foxie lay as stiff as a post with his chin resting on his two front paws, his eyes hopping from Milo to Jasper continuously as he waited anxiously for another argument to begin between the two. It was either that, or Milo was going to start picking on him again.

"Foxie," said a relaxed Jasper with his eyes closed. "Could you please entertain Milo by telling him if you saw the rainbow and heard the seashells before we found you?"

Milo developed a huge grin on his face and couldn't wait to hear Foxie's answer but he also noticed that Jasper's ears were suddenly up and he knew that Jasper was also very interested to hear the answer even though he pretended to be uninterested. They had a bet, after all.

"A rainbow?" asked Foxie confused. "And seashells? No, why?"

"Oh great!" said Milo sarcastically. He turned his head towards Jasper. "He's not only thirsty and hungry but deaf and blind too."

"Am not," defended Foxie.

"Are too," teased Milo.

"Am not!"

"Are too!"

"Am n..."

"Enough!" interrupted Jasper, annoyed at the ridiculous quarrel between the two.

"I saw a big tree!" continued Foxie. "A really, really big tree...that is not there now."

Jasper opened his eyes and lifted his head and at the same time, Milo's eyes stretched and his tail began wagging out of control. Milo was just about to say something when Jasper beat him to it. "Wait a minute! You're telling me that you didn't see the rainbow, you didn't hear the seashells but you saw a tree and that it had now disappeared?"

"Uh-huh!" confirmed Foxie. "I heard singing too and then I fell asleep and when I woke up, it was gone. This cabin looked different after I woke up too."

Milo and Jasper turned their heads quickly, looked at each other as if to make sure they heard the same thing, and then excused themselves to talk in private.

Such a cute story. I am thoroughly enjoying it. It reminds me of a story my kids loved as children called The Fox and the Hound. I look forward to finding out more about this tree! Is Foxie really safe with the dogs?

Thanks @broncofan99. It does have a "Fox and Hound" feeling, doesn't it? Such a coincidence really. Lol.
