Foxie on a mission - A story for children aged 7-12 - PART 12

in #fiction6 years ago (edited)

While crawling out of the old, hollow log, everything was dead quiet. Not a sound coming from the woods - no crickets, no wind, no rain and definitely no thunder or lightning. But there was a funny smell though. It was strong, rich and sharp but not the kind of smell that belonged in the woods.

"Guys," said Foxie while coming to a halt. "Am I the only one who thinks that there is something strange going on in the woods today?"

Milo was sniffing around in circles. He held his nose low as he walked around trying to find out where the smell was coming from, his tail stiff in the air. Grandma Owl adjusted her glasses as she came out of the log and started to sneeze uncontrollably once she was outside.

"There's only one thing that I'm allergic to," Grandma Owl got out before her next big sneeze. "Lavender!"

Ha-tissue!!!

She flew up into the nearest tree and sat down on a branch trying to clear her nostrils. Milo and Foxie sat watching as she shook her feathers back into position. "Shhhh," she quietly said and then put her wing in front of her mouth in a gesture to show the other two to be quiet. It was obvious to them that she had spotted something. Milo quickly positioned himself in front of Foxie in an attempt to keep him safe, just in case there were trouble heading their way.

"This way!" whispered Grandma Owl and then flew off the branch. Milo and Foxie followed her as fast as they could but they could not keep up. They both stopped running to listen for the sound of her wings flapping in the air as to get a clue where she was, but it was her sneeze that helped them sense which way she had gone. A few minutes later, they found her sitting on a green patch of grass with both her wings spread out. There was a thin line of smoke coming from behind her.

"Stay here, King Fox," Milo said and slowly walked towards Grandma Owl. She shifted to the side when Milo arrived and had him investigate with her. They found that the smoke came from an incense stick that was sticking out from the grass but it was the hole in the grass that they found very suspicious.

"Look!" said Grandma Owl as she looked into the hole. "There is something inside!"

Milo looked inside the hole and saw it too. He lifted his one eyebrow and then looked at Grandma Owl. "You weren't suggesting that I should stick my paw in there, were you?" said Milo sarcastically.

"Do my feet look long enough to reach inside?" Grandma Owl snapped back.

"I can't even see what it is," Milo replied. "I'm not sticking my paw in there! What if it's a trap?"

Grandma Owl looked at him. "My, my!" she smirked. "I would have never guessed that the almighty Milo would be a scaredy cat!"

"Ha-ha! Very funny!" Milo dramatically replied. "I see what you're doing! You're trying to make me feel bad. It's not going to work! I'm not sticking my paw in there, no ways! No!"
