Foxie on a mission - A story for children aged 7-12 - PART 14

in #fiction6 years ago (edited)

"This is not a letter," Grandma Owl said very seriously. "This is a riddle. And I can tell you one thing that I'm quite sure of...it was written thousands of years ago!"

"Thousands of years???" asked Foxie.

Grandma Owl continued. "This paper is very old. You can see that the ink has faded to such an extent that one would not be able to read it without close inspection. Also, the handwriting reminds me of ancient times. I remember reading a book about this once."

Milo's eyes expanded to two huge circles. "Phew!" he said. "I almost thought it was meant for us!"

Foxie sat down immediately. He had an idea that Milo was wrong, very wrong! Grandma Owl took a few seconds to respond.

"Of course it's for us!" she snapped. "You are the canine, the clown! How in the world did you think the incense stick got here?"

"Well excuse me for thinking with my head!" Foxie sarcastically replied. "If you're so clever, Grandma Owl, please enlighten us as to who left this here for us thousands of years ago!"

Grandma Owl turned her back on them and started walking up and down while patting herself on the head continuously with her one wing. She was old and although some of the words in the riddle sounded familiar, she had to try and remember what they meant.

Foxie once again held his paw over his nose. The strong smell of the incense stick irritated his nostrils too much, but it was then that he remembered a time when he smelled it before and he also remembered the same burning sensation in his nostrils.

"Grandma Owl," Foxie said. "Do you remember the day you found me?"

She did not answer but he continued anyway. "My mommy carried me to the spot where you found me. On our way there, I remember being carried past a hill where the same strong smell came from. My mommy ran as fast as she could to get me away from there because I was crying about my nose burning." Grandma Owl stopped in her tracks, turned around and walked towards Foxie. Something he said had caught her attention. She did not say anything but made it obvious that she wanted him to continue what he was saying.

"I never remembered this until now, but we were in great danger that day," he continued. "There were wild cats everywhere and they attacked my father who was trying to defend us. My mommy had to take me to a safer place and when she left me there, she promised that she would come back for me after she saved my father."

With both her wings flying up in the air, Grandma Owl almost swallowed a fly as she gasped. "That's it!" she exclaimed. "Canines are dogs. Felines are cats. Lavandula...that's lavender!" and with that, she started flapping her wings as fast as she could and flew straight up into the sky.

"Come on, you two!" she shouted from above. "Follow me!"
