Foxie on a mission - A story for children aged 7-12 - PART 7

in #fiction6 years ago

"Milooo! Jasper! Dinner time!"

It was Wayne calling them the way he always does. He was a hunter and went out every day in search for food. Because he was a hermit, he never went to town or even owned a truck but instead, he grew vegetables in his backyard and hunted whatever he could find for meat.

"He probably came back while we were talking" said Milo while sniffing in search of a clue of what's for dinner.

As Milo and Jasper came around the corner of the house, Foxie was nowhere to be seen. The door of the tool shed was open as always after Wayne comes back. He must have came in around back and if he would have discovered the fox there, that's what they would have had for dinner.

"There you are!" Wayne seemed happy to see them. The smell of fresh meat came from the tool shed. It was a deer that had been gutted and it was hanging from the hook. In their bowls were some of last night's left-overs and although they did not notice it until then, the both of them were very hungry.

Milo ran as quickly as he could to his bowl and without chewing, he gulped everything up until his tummy looked like it was going to explode. But not Jasper. He sniffed walked around the tool shed and trees slowly and quietly, with his nose on the ground, trying to figure out where the fox might be.

Wayne was in and out of the shed so he did not notice what the dogs were up to. He sharpened his knife and began separating the deer's skin from it's meat. Jasper knew that it would be a long night as Wayne would not go to bed before chopping up all the meat first.

As Milo lay down to catch some shut eye, he noticed something in the distance. He could not really make out what it was so he gave a few barks to catch Jasper's attention. Wayne peeked his head out of the door to see what Milo was yapping about and while doing so, he noticed that Jasper hasn't touched his food yet.

He gave a familiar whistle and Jasper immediately came to call and obediently sat down at his master's feet.

Wayne took off his gloves and bent down to stroke Jasper's head lovingly. He knew that Jasper was getting older and that his time was getting shorter. "What's the matter old man? You feeling alright?" he said as he lifted Jasper's lip up to inspect his teeth and gums. Jasper gave a shiver and wagged his tail - his way of returning affection. "Eat boy, it's for your own good!"

Jasper headed over to his bowl and took a few bites to please his master. Wayne gave him a satisfied smile and then went back into the shed to continue his work.

"Eat old man!" teased Milo when he saw Jasper leaving the bowl to continue his search.

"Shut your hole and help me look, would you?" replied an irritated Jasper. "You'll be old too some day!"

"You go!" said Milo. "He likes you more than me anyways. I saw something moving that side," and he pointed with his nose straight ahead.
