Welcome to the #ExchangeReport!

USD values are calculated per day via API feeds from Poloniex (for STEEM and SBD values in BTC) and Coindesk (for USD value of BTC). For the top 50 reports in USD terms, I take the average USD value for STEEM and SBD for the week using the daily average which came out to:

  • STEEM: $1.13519
  • SBD: $1.82339

Previous Report:

  • STEEM: $0.94392
  • SBD: $1.78745

Assumptions

Please see the first report for a detailed explanation of my personal assumptions related to what this data could mean (along with commentary on previous reports). What it does not show is people powering up, powering down, or if they are buying or selling on an exchange. It's just some interesting data dealing with transfers to and from exchange accounts.

Commentary

  • Another nice low withdrawl to deposit ratio at 3.69 to 1, but it is creaping up a bit.

  • Wow, @dantheman had a nice payday this week. Over $400k. Hopefully that'll be enough to fund EOS development for a while. :)

  • I'm loving the price increases this week, but the crash in crypto prices yesterday and today will change a lot of that. The next few weeks are going to be really interesting. Will things recover and keep increasing or come back down to where they were about a month ago?

  • I can't help but wonder, how many of these withdrawals were just taking advantage of the high price and selling in order to buy back cheaper? I wish I was good at that.

  • The powerdown amounts for next week are again in the green at 10.22%, but not by much (Wed 5/31 is in the red).

Once again we are at the stage when STEEM is too expensive. Imagine how much money you need to spend for Hero status.

Too expensive based on... what? Is Bitcoin too expensive? Ethereum too expensive? A share of Berkshire Hathaway too expensive? (Well, probably yes for that last one).

Price is subjective and based on timescale. On a long enough timescale, I think STEEM is highly undervalued right now.

Really good article. We all knew there would be a correction after this buying frenzy, and that the whales would sell once it was clearly evident the market was overbought to take their profit, but you ask the question I have been asking myself, will they buy back in after fair market value is established? That's a question we'll have to wait to and see on.

There are so many new people entering the crypto market that undoubtedly we're going to have some huge swings. Price swings are inevitable and corrections to fair value are perfectly healthy in a true free market, which is what I believe we have, and that in it's self is a breath of fresh air. Great work. Followed

Thank you!

Yeah, I think the future price of STEEM will be much higher. There's just so much potential here. I also considered buying high and selling low during this price correction, but this internal dialogue kept me from pulling the trigger.

Thank you for linking your other article. Another very good read bringing up excellent points. You ask the one question I believe is the most important, "Would I buy this at higher prices if I believe in it's value and that it is going higher." That's the deciding factor now in all my decisions, "Price means nothing, value is everything." I question myself quite often about trying to time trends, but our family fortune teller seems to be subpar, b/c my past results in doing so haven't been the best. So now i just hold until I believe the long term value is there. Not very flashy and a whole lot less exciting, but I sleep a lot better now. :)

Sleeping better has a value all it's own. I bought some more BitShares last night and felt good about being up 9%. This morning that same purchase is down 10%. It's almost enough to make someone turn to day trading. :) I agree, holding long term seems to work best for me.

It's healthy for any free market to consolidate after a nice run. The moves that scare me are the parabolic moves.

Parabolic rises do end up correcting, but they also are a bummer to miss out on and the correction often ends up being higher than the trend line.

Very good Post :)

Fingers are crossed that you are right about Steemit and I think you are right! It seems like a great platform and unless someone figures out a way to shutdown Steemit I think it's going to be a beautiful ride! DR

I agree! The tech is great and the problems it is solving are numerous.

Yes indeed my friend!

I still think the crash was pretty much due... if not overdue. I really thought BTC would find quite a bit of resistance breaking through $2000... and when it just blasted through that level like a rocket, I found myself thinking "Uh-oh...." and feeling tempted to put on a flak jacket.

Still very positive about Steem... Steemit and all the attendant apps being developed continue to create an economic reason for the currency to exist, and that's a HUGE plus, from where I am sitting. How many other alt coins actually have economies?

A lot of people don't like the concept of appcoins, but to me they make sense if the economic system also makes sense. If done right, it can be two reasons to give the ecosystem value. I like how Steemit doesn't cost anything to use, and that's a huge difference between it and many other appcoins.

Yes, I've noticed some don't care for appcoins... but as a "late comer" to cryptos, "utility" is one of my sticking points or at least points of skepticism with this whole ball of wax. And yes, I appreciate this is a whole new asset class... but simply being an "exciting" technology doesn't mean much unless there are functional implementations people can wrap their heads around.

If these are currencies, then what are they FOR? What can I functionally BUY with them? Can I walk into Costco and pay for a set of patio furniture with Steem or Bitcoin? If the answer is "nothing" then they have no more "use" to me than the late great Zimbabwean dollar.

On the other hand, if cryptos are purely "investment vehicles," then what am I investing in? Well, when I have a choice between CoinX and CoinY, then one of them having apps... becomes the tiebreaker. Yes, blockchain technology is awesome... and so is cold fusion... but unless you can actually power the grid with it, it's not going to effectively make the world a better place.

Now I'm not intending for this to be a rant-- I'm just playing Devil's advocate. IF cryptos/altcoins truly want mainstream acceptance, then they also have to speak a "language" that makes sense to more than a few thousand hard core blockchainiacs.
