My Thursday Favorites #23 Contest Entry - Exercise!

I have chronic pain from Rheumatoid Arthritis. My favorite exercise is stretching, because without doing it many times a day, my pain and stiffness go off the charts and then I can barely move at all.

I first found out stretching would be good for me when I hired a fitness trainer to help me lose weight. When we first started working together I was very sick and could not walk more than twenty minutes at a time.

My trainer had never worked with anyone as fat and sick as I was, and was afraid I might die on him if we worked out too hard. If you take a look at my "Before and After" poster at the bottom of this post, you can see how unhealthy I was at the start of this time and then look at my transformation.

One of his solutions as we got started working together was to teach me gentle stretching to do before and after our very short walks. The idea was to move everything I could from head to toe in a sequence I could do. He taught me the moves in a “hot” room in my home at the time, and I did them with him and also on the days we did not work together as best I could.

Yes, I was improving my diet at the same time, but my new exercise routine was a key reason I was able to lose weight and get healthier in such a short time.

The first post I wrote about my weight loss and health success was less than three weeks after starting with him, and 10 months after that – BOOM! I had lost “Half My Size” at the age of 50 with the weight never to come back.

Today, I am soon to turn 60 years old and continue to stretch to this day. I stretch in bed before and after sleep and for a few minutes every hour or two throughout each day. I might stretch out my back in the early morning, my shoulders a couple hours later, and my hands and feet at yet another time.

I try to get from head to toe each day, but I am not too picky about how that goes. If I keep it up, all will be well over the course of every week. I can tell when I have not stretched something enough, and because I sit working so much, my hips get stretched out two times on most days.

My stretching routine is based on my individual needs and preference and I am so grateful to have this skill so late in life. If I had been doing this all my throughout the years, a lot of things might have gone better for me and my health, but let us not waste time on regret!

This stretching idea is so ingrained and part of me know that I would feel strange not doing it.

And as I said at the beginning of this post, I have arthritis and it is progressing with joint damage and many other symptoms. When I cannot do anything else, I can stretch. Once I do stretch for even a few minutes, my body loosens up and I can better do the next activity of my daily life in much better form.

I lost "Half My Size" eight years ago by using natural methods. No tricks, just doing a bit better every day. I started on October 10 one year, and did not give up. Four years later, on October 5th, there I was - thin and healthy for the first time in my life. You can do it too!

I agree stretching is one of the best exercises to keep pain and stiffness at bay. If I don’t stretch for a more than 2 days, I can start feeling my muscles ache with every turn and bend. I tried the leg up against the wall stretch once after reading an article about its benefits but haven’t tried the bending of the knee. And the leaning forward is not easy 😅 I like doing sun salutation stretches.

You are way ahead of me with sun salutation stretches! I have never been able to to them. My ex did 3 each morning and he was really good at them. Maybe that could be a goal for me :)

I really love to get my legs up in the air. The blood flow change alone in worth it!
