According the the chronological order of religions i will start with the “Judaism”.

The Hebrew Bible “Torah” and its subsequent portions criticrize the interet-taking, but the biblical interpretations differ about this prohibition, so the main understanding is that jews are not allowed to impose interest on loans granted to other jews, but they are obliged to collect interest in transactions with non-jews.

Some examples from the Hebrew Bible about this provision:

“Deuteronomy 23:19 Thou shalt no lend upon interest to thy brother: interest of money, interest of victuals, interest of anything that is lent upon interest.”
That means in the Deuteronomy 23:19 (Do not lend with interest to your brother. The interest of money, the interest of the beneficiaries or the interest of anything that is lent on interest).

“Deuteronomy 23:20 Unto a foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon interest; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou puttest thy hand unto, in the land whither thou goest in to possess it.”

Also in Deuteronomy 23:20 (To a foreign lender impose interest. But to your brother do not lend with interest. That the lord your God may bless you in all this where your put your hand in the land where you go to possess it).

The Israelites were barred from charging interest to other Israelites, but were allowed to charge interest for transactions with non-Israelis.
Generally they were seen as useful to avoid debt, to avoid obeying someone else. Debt should have been avoided and not used to finance consumption only in case when needed.
