As it was discovered in the “Mycenae tombs” of 1550-1500 BC. The first forms of money storage used were the primitive money boxes that were similarly made in the form of the beehive.
In the ancient Greek society, the Private and Civil entities (especially the Temples since they were the places where treasure was deposited to be kept in safe) established some sort of financial transactions (deposits, currency checking and exchange, loans).
The three most important temples were the temple of (Artemis in Ephesus), the temple of (Hera in Samoa) and the temple of (Apollo in Delphi).
Before the end of the 7th century BC. The first treasury was built in the “Apollonian temple”, where the temple safe was built by the city of “Siphnos” during the 6th century.
During the invasion of 480 of the Persians and before they destroy the temple of “Acropolis of Athens” that was used for storing money, “Pericles” (Greek statesman) rebuilt a depository within the “Parthenon”.
In the Ptolemaic period (305-284), the temples have been replaced by “state depots” as a location for security deposits where records exist to prove that this have occurred by the end of the rule of “Ptolemy I”.
With the increase of need for new buildings for operations, the state started the construction of these places in the cities around the markets.
