Audacity Tutorial 27 - How to use the Echo Effect
In this Audacity tutorial we will be looking at Echo. Echo is an effect that is used on most music recording, but can also be useful in many other projects such as sound design for TV and theatre.
The Echo effect is exactly as it's name implies - it creates echo! The Echo effect in Audacity is very simple and easy to use. There are a couple of variables we can control to customize the sound exactly the way we like.
Like Reverb and EQ, you can use Echo to create your own signature sound when producing your music. Audacity allows you to find tune your echo sound then save it as a preset to use in future projects.
Audacity Tutorial - How to use the Echo Effect
Procedure:
The Echo effect in Audacity is a sound treatment which allows us to use an original recording to create echo. Time delay on the echo (Delay time) and the rate at which it fades away (Decay factor) can be altered to make an exact echo pattern you need.
In this video tutorials I go over most of these settings and explain how they are used.
When the Echo Effect and the Reverb Effect are combined some very impressive sonic environments can be created using Audacity.

I haven't used the Echo effect before, only Reverb. What's the difference between the two?
Hi @morodiene. I hope you are having a great Holiday :)
Reverb and echo in combination can give a very life-like representation of a room. Imagine you are in a room with a hard wall at the far end. When you clap you will hear an 'echo' milliseconds after the clap. Then you will hear a diffused ambient sound of the room as the sound ways dissipate. Echo gives that first 'echo' and Reverb gives the soft diffused sound which quickly fades away. Either alone sounds ok, but never quite convincing. A careful combo of both make very nice room sounds. Try experimenting and you will be quite surprised with the results.
Thank you for the explanation! I'll definitely give this a try in future recordings.
I'll have to play with the effects a bit the next time I record something.
Sure thing @amberyooper. Used a little reverb on the Christmas sing-along, but no echo. I did not have time to really fine tune the treatments. Oh well. There is always next time.
I'd love to hear some of your experiments.
So glad I found you on here. I use Audacity and definitely need the expertise you are providing. Awesome stuff.
That is great to hear. Let me know if you need any help. I will be posting many more tutorials over the coming weeks.
You have so much here. It's awesome. I'll let you know if I need help. Thanks.
My pleasure
