August Garden Journal update

We have been in a drought and my garden is not doing too good.
I won't be planting for a fall garden...

Flowers

Now you know why they call them "naked ladies."
After lush green leaves in the spring which die back to the ground. Around now, they shoot up a bunch of flowers with no leaves.
I see them everywhere around here. Old homesteads, in town, ...

The zinnias are starting to die. I'll be saving seeds...

Transplanted hostas are blooming

Vegetables

Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes!!!
Don't be sad for me because of the drought.
I am having all the tomatoes I want.
They make me happy, happy, happy!!!

Cucumbers are coming on, but they aren't growing very long vines...

The sugar melons are a little bigger than a golf ball. It doesn't look like they will make.
The big melons are getting dark spots on the ends. Oh well, maybe next year...

The Three Sisters
Pretty much a flop.
Corn (that was raided by the coons and didn't make because of the drought) ,
pole beans (that didn't make) a few came up but didn't produce, a few only got about 4" tall

Squash - I planted what ended up being striped zucchini, butternut squash, 2 types of large melons, cantaloupe (harvested about a dozen) and sugar melons.
I see 2 butternuts about 6 inches long at this point and a few blooms, so may get a few more...

Raised bed success
Strawberries are looking great for next year.
Anyone know what that purple vine is growing in there?

Asparagus has several ferns, so should get to harvest some next year.
The Italian peppers finally started getting more meaty. They are tasty.

  • new rose of sharon bushes

  • 3 clematis vines
  • transplanted hibiscus plants
  • Grandpa's tiger lily

On order:

  • big hostas, kiwi vine, silver lace vine, creeping phlox, daffodils, grape hyacinths, mimosa tree, gala apple tree, snow crocus and a few other things...

Still looking for tulips, tiger lilies and a few other things to plant this fall.

Sorry to hear so many things didn't make it, but on the other hand, a lot of things seemed to be a success too. I guess that 's (garden) life :0)

The good news.

  • My freezer won't be packed with shredded zucchini...
  • My friends don't run away when I show up at their place (haha in most years with an armful of zucchini... haha)
  • I won't get sick of eating zucchini bread this year...

Haha!

::shrug:: It's years like this that keep us humble haha

We have crazy weather here in north central Missouri. Next year it might be rainy or who knows it might be the perfect year to garden...

The cantaloupes were wonderful,
I harvested more from planting seeds, than the same money would have bought at the store,
My tomato crop is GREAT,
so I am a happy, happy man! :D

Thanks for starting the journal initiative! It has been fun looking at other gardens and will be fun to look back on mine...
