ULOG: 28 Let me tell about my evening in the garden!!!
I'm indescribably happy!!!
I'm bummed!!!
I'm... how do you spell eh? nope, that's not it ... It's the sound you make when you're OK with something, but maybe a bit let down... ???
I'm happy!!!
Here goes...
I'm indescribably happy!!!
I was watering the garden tonight. Had made it down one row of tomatoes, watered the 4 tomatoes in cages and the Hungarian wax peppers and jalapeno peppers. There was one other bell pepper I started watering. Now, if you've followed my blog, you might remember these peppers had all the leaves eaten off them by rabbits the night I planted them...
- So I was watering that one lone, small bell pepper with the not too good looking pepper growing on it, and noticed something shiny. At first I thought it was probably a pop tab. Then I looked closer and saw it was a quarter. Cool. Dang, I wonder how that fell out of my pocket. I even reached in my pocket to see if any of my change was there. It was.
- I reached over and picked it up.
Holy Moly it's a 1936 quarter!!!
That didn't fall out of my pocket!!!
That surely fell out of my Grandpa's pocket!!!
Man. If coins could talk I bet this one would have a story or two to tell!!!
I wonder what it's worth???
https://www.coinstudy.com/1936-quarter-value.html says $2.91 USD.
http://www.coinflation.com/ says $2.81 USD.
Connecting with my Grandpa 30 or so years after he passed...
Priceless!!!
Let me tell you, I am on top of the world!!!
But then I worked my way around the garden and found...
Raccoons got about a dozen ears of baby corn.
I'm bummed!!!
::shrug::
I can buy corn for about $3/dozen at the farmer's market. But it won't be as good as having the water boiling, picking and shucking the fresh corn, cooking and eating it fresh from the garden.
- I'm guessing they will be back for seconds
- and thirds
- and fourths
- I'll be lucky if I get to eat any from my garden this year.
Bummer!!!
A bit let down, but OK with it
I dug my potatoes.
Here's the first one I found.
I also cut my heads of cabbage.
3 out of the 6 I started with. 2 died, 1 was wormy. ugh! haha
I've never grown cabbage before, can anyone tell me...
Under the heads were some smaller heads growing out perpendicular to the stalk. They kind of look like brussel sprouts. Are these good to eat?
I pulled the rest of my onions.
Most were fairly small 2-3 inches or so...
They are pretty strong tasting. I'm guessing due to the drought we are in?
I'm happy!!!
30 Sun Gold cherry tomatoes were ripe tonight! These are awesome.
3 red cherry tomatoes. I didn't know I planted any, but there they are. They are actually a bit bigger than what I would call cherry tomatoes. Maybe they are stunted big ones?
2 yellow and 2 red regular tomatoes.
Eating garden fresh tomatoes makes me happy happy happy!!!
Remember the rabbits that ate the leaves off my pepper plants?
The tomcat caught one tonight! Lil bugger! You'll not be eating any more of my garden! ha!!!
For some reason, Trixie who was raised by our cats, got to eat it...
One less varmint to eat my garden makes me happy!
Conclusion
I was an emotional roller coaster tonight as I watered and worked in my garden...

Check out the easiest 14.3 Steem I ever made!
My post about it...

hey! congratulations on finding the coin. I'm surprised you didn't see it before now. So, this is a silver quarter! Cool. At least that's what the top link you listed is saying. That's even better. It's amazing how, at a minimum, something with the face value of 25 cents can actually be worth nearly 12 times that much.
You guys shoot raccoons and other varmints in Missouri, right? Set out traps, scare them off with whatever scares raccoons. I feel like you're kind of giving in to the inevitable here. There's precious ears of fresh garden corn to save!
How about the tomcat. Is it mean enough to take on the masked marauders?
Potatoes look good. Probably larger than ours.
We've grown cabbage, but I don't know enough about them to say anything definitive, but my first reaction is maybe, but probably not. Does it look like its maybe something like seeds or something?
Oh yeah! I'm happy. My butternut squash have little ones about 3 inchers! And still quite a few flowers. And my striped zucchini have 3 more about ready to pick! I can't believe I'm excited about getting more zucchini. Usually I'm overwhelmed with them! haha And another cantaloupe has turned tan, starting to ripen... Woohoo!!! Life is good!

How awesome would that be if that quarter did fall out of your Grandfather's pocket many years ago. Sweet find!
My mother back home in South Carolina kept a garden going for a few years and I always loved going back to visit to find what she had been growing. Good luck on keeping those raccoons out of there!
Thanks. Yes, very lucky find.
Do you collect silver? If not now is the time to start with that find.
I do have a bit of silver and other things. I think it's a great investment!
Glad to hear about your wife. Awesome to hear about people who have beat it before.
Yeah silver hasn’t been a great investment for yet. I’m holding it for a long term game though. Back in college is when I got into silver. I used to tutor a some kids and their dad would pay me in silver. He was a huge Ron Paul fan and that’s when I first heard of him.
Thanks! She fought like a girl and won! :D
I mainly got some silver in case of a SHTF scenario. I'm amazed they've been able to keep the debt-is-money fiat currency economy afloat this long.
Haha this made me laugh out loud as I read your roller-coaster ride around the garden. Isn't it funny how you can be thrilled one moment and bum to the next. I love that little connection to your grandfather. How they live on in our memories.
Mission accomplished... Make someone LOL every day... :D
It's "meh" that fed up sound that there isn't a darn thing you can do but throw your arms up and shake your head?
I feel your pain and joy!
I am just getting started on my garden. We've have many days where temps have reached over 105 degrees F.
My dog is the keeper of this land. Birds are not allowed to land in our trees or on the wires behind the house. Planes are not allowed to fly overhead, however they do and it pisses her off.
Possums are immediately put to death for trespassing, skunks hold there own, and gophers stay in the neighbors yard.
We have too many coyotes to ever imagine rabbits or other varmits running around. Heck, most small pets are coyote food.
When I actually have some veggies to share, I will.
Enjoy the good eats
That's so cool!
Same here! Thank you so much!
Btw, mine says 1974... accidentlly included the coin in this pic...
you win! :-)
