Got A WEAKNESS? Turn It Into STRENGTH

in #thealliance6 years ago (edited)

Like every human being I too had my list of strengths and weaknesses. But over the course of time I was able to turn some of those weaknesses into strengths. Nothing brings me greater satisfaction than looking back over time and remembering how it used to be with a weakness that is now a strength.

»»------(¯` ´¯)------»»

Two skills that I am proud of having turned into strengths are public speaking and writing. When I was young I would have counted both as just about average and nothing to talk about. I used to always want to improve on those two so-called weaknesses of mine so that I could progress in my life and career.

After I had developed my weakness into skills I used to enjoy using them and also be proud of my achievement. I also developed the confidence with which I knew that if I want to develop a strength it is quite possible, even a new one. I like the thought of one day remembering how I overcame my weakness.

If you have a weakness that you really want to improve upon, you can try perseverance. It works really well when you approach it with a great deal of perseverance. For a start, write down 4 or 5 steps that you will take to improve upon your weakness and set about doing those 5 things. It involves doing something every day till you make substantial improvements.

Stick with the tasks every day and if you have trouble with any of them do some research to help you make it better. For example if you want to improve your writing here is a list of tasks that you can practice daily:

  1. Decide on a topic
  2. Research
  3. Write 300 words(or more)
  4. Edit your content
  5. Publish it on Steemit

»»------(¯` ´¯)------»»

The list has only the bullet points and obviously you will need to do much more to improve on your skill for writing. But this is just to give you an idea as to how to go about it. Writing 300 words does not take time if you have looked up some sources on the internet and know what to write. Take notes when you are conducting research and then write your content on the basis of those points.

The more you practice this the better you will become at your skill. After a while you will realize that overcoming a weakness boils down to a few simple steps. I have given an example above.

You will also know yourself better by pinpointing the reason for your weakness. For example you may find it too difficult on deciding a topic. Or it could be that you don't know what to write. Both issues can be solved with a bit of perseverance. Finding a topic is based on what you know or have an interest in.

Doing research before writing content makes your content complete. If you know about a topic well you can also write from what you know. Later there will come a time when you will write out of sheer habit and inspiration, as many Steemit bloggers do and also enjoy doing it.

Getting over something like public speaking may be a bit more complicated but again you need to follow through with your action plan. If you feel nervous in front of an audience start you speaking practice in front of a friend or a member of family.

»»------(¯` ´¯)------»»

Once you have mastered the art of speaking in front of one person try speaking in front of a group of people. While doing so, trick your mind into believing that you are still speaking to your friend or the on person you have practiced in front of. After a while you will be completely free of stage fright or anxiety while speaking and will enjoy public speaking.

One thing that you should never do is to continue treating a weakness as one. If you persevere with improving your skill you can even take a course or have a mentor to help you with it. Don't give up easily and be adamant about improvements and you will be on your way to creating a great long-lasting skill.

What is the area of improvement that you are planning to develop into a skill? What challenges did you face when you were improving upon your weakness?

@maxabit, great job of encouraging people to turn weaknesses into strengths.

I agree that perseverance and practice as keys to becoming better. The only thing that I might add is being careful not to be so comfortable with our strengths that we stop growing. I have to be careful about this personally.

I want to continue to become a better writer. I have improved since joining Steemit in June 2017, but I still have a lot of areas in which I need to grow.

Keep moving forward and keep Steeming!

Completely agree with you - don't form a "comfort zone" with your strengths. There's always always room for improvement.

You are a good writer! Let me put it this way, if you compete with the trending page gurus on the basis of pure content quality(only, not with their super-high SP), you will give them a run for their money!

This is such a good motivating post and great advice,

Gave me a bit of motivation to work on things for myself

Glad that it could motivate you!

Having said that, you're quite a motivation yourself with your regular, beautiful posts. (-:

Thanks kindly so nice if you to say
I feel I could do more with my posts when things settle down I will try and make some changes

I think the best people learn how to take a weakness and turn it into a strength.

I was never any good at writing in my youth preferring numbers and probably why I studied accounting and finance but since starting blogging about something that literally flipped me insideout I am finding my groove and improving daily. It does take me what feels like forever to write post but i have noticed that reducing the more i do it too.

The more you write the easier it will become. If you face writer's block ever, just start typing anything on a blank document and within minutes you will be typing your way to a great post.

Thanks for the great tip. 😁

After you have recognized the weakness then you can work towards the conquering of it. Weakness is not always a bad thing; I believe our weakenesses keep us on our toes and helps on the path to success.

So true! Only once you identify a weakness can you work on it. A weakness can be an opportunity for some, which may even turn out to be one of their greatest strengths one day.
