Curiosity #33 How Can We Survive on Mars?

in #science7 years ago

Welcome my dear Steemian friends to a new episode of Curiosity! A series in which we will answer some of the questions that makes us all curious.

Today Scientists Believe that it no longer a question that we will ever set foot on Mars , but its the matter of when considering the technological advancement happened in the last decade. This idea is very fascinating but is it a good one? How can we get there? Biggest obstacles? could we even survive there? Well lets find out the answer.

How can we get on Mars?

If a rocket is sent all the way to mars, it must be fast enough to get out of earths gravity. Timing of the rocket launch is the key to reach mars. Mars and Earth orbit sun at relatively different speeds and distance. Only every two years the planets are in perfect positions to send a rocket to mars with least rocket fuel and faster. The total journey is going to be over 300 million miles long. If every thing goes right it would take 8 or 9 months to reach the red planet.

Reasons to go to Mars:

Lets face it, we humans need to go to mars for tons of reasons. First reason is setting foot in the new world, which have been never explored before gives us the opportunity to explore the great frontier. Also , the second reason is to create a back up location of humans if something goes wrong on the earth due to climate changes or any natural disaster. Another reason is to explore the mines of some of the most precious metals, finding water. Their cave system could be used as the habitats for the humanity.

Reasons to not to Go to Mars

Before you plan to go to mars, let me tell you mars is not a very friendly place. There is no breathable air on mars. Its a incredibly hostile place for humans. You can pass out and expire in just a matter of minutes without any oxygen on mars. There is no air, very low temperature and a constant bombardment of radiation fro space. Because of this constant streaming of radiation the soil is now highly toxic which is highly unsuitable to grow any plant on mars. Even if we deal with all these issues, what about a constant and proper medical supplies? Shipping all these things are gonna be very expensive which may cause a drop in supply by time.

Also low gravity on mars will affect human body over months or years. The low gravity might show the long term effects decreasing the human life span.

So,How can we Survive On Mars?

So, you are already planning on moving to Mars. Well have you got the list of things to take with you to the Mars? No?. Let me help you. Things you will need , a billion dollar spaceship,  a space suit to save you from cold , heat and high radiation and a life long supply of oxygen and food and don't forget a lifetime supply of water. Also some medical supplies.

On mars, you will of course need to wear a pressurized suit whenever you go out. Every time you go out, you suit bring the radiation in , which might show long term effects of radiation exposure. For a long term habitat we will need to extract water from the underground of Mars which in turn can be used to generate breathable air and fuels.

Also, We need the sources of food on mars. We can produce our own food on Mars, once we decontaminate the soil and it is supplemented with some needed chemicals.

To thrive on mars, your newer generation are going to be genetically modified. This could lead future generations adapt to the low air  pressure, low gravity and high radiation environment. Also with time , plants would start to adapt and animals offspring might too, But they all would look completely different.

So what do you think? Could you survive on mars?

Sort:

there are many research saying that life is possible on Mars its relative to Earth.

it needs to be terraformed to support life. :)

yes! but there also some research that there is a presence of water in Mars so it means there's a life.
