Once Neglected, Arcadius Now Travels the World

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Arcadius came to my rescue starving and scared, but with a hopeful spirit.

He was infested with fleas and mites, and covered in open wounds. His owner was a hoarder, and did not physically beat him as most of the rescues I take in, but could not provide enough food for the pets. There was also many cat fights, based on the number of claw wounds, which is common in households with too many cats.

Arcadius was skitty, having not had much physical attention due to the mass amount of pets, and needed careful and patient handling to show him human hands could be trusted. His physical wounds healed fairly quickly but his trust took the longest. He also had to learn there was now enough food to go around, and no longer needed to choke down his meals! This boy literally inhaled his food for weeks, and even came down with a nasty bout of pneumonia from aspirating his bites.

His new Mom accepted a rotating teaching position in Europe shortly after adoption. Arcadius is currently savoring fine cheeses while enjoying views of the Eiffel tower and Parisian nightlife from his lovely loft window perch.

He is one lucky kitty. My neighbour is a hoarder too and the cats are malnourished, sick, never been immunised, flea and worm infested...you name it. I helped to feed them whenever I could but I prevent my kids from playing with them due to their poor condition. I don't own pets and have no intention to keep one.

Poor guys.

One thing you can do to help with the infestation is add a spoonful of Diotomaceous earth to the food you so generously provide. Be sure it is Food Grade Diotomaceous Earth and not the kind for pools. This will kill any internal parasites and make them feel better at least on the inside :)

Thank you for the tip @arbitrarykitten . Unfortunately Food Grade Diotomaceous Earth is not widely available here. I will pass the info to the owner though. Thanks.

this is where I got my "food grade" diatomaceous earth. I use it for just about everything from replacing talcum powder to keep areas dry, dealing with bugs, even mix some in with tea sometimes. Great stuff, with many great uses...

It does come in smaller bags as well, but 2 pounds will cost you over half the cost of the 10 pound bag.

I get mine from Amazon. And if you massage it into the pets fur, it shreds fleas and mites, too :)

I am not sure if the pet shop has them but I doubt it. I really pity those cats.

you have to be careful using it this way though, as it is still best not to inhale much of this dust.

Says the man who has had half an inch of DE and salt mixed together spread all over the floor.
Lol.

but do you think it does really work against internal parasites? as you said above?
It's my understanding that once moist, it has zero effect.
That's why it is considered harmless to us.

D.E. is great stuff, but I was actually wondering that too. It would be good to have more scientific data on this aspect.

Also, the natural one (food grade), while one should definitely avoid breathing it in, is not nearly as dangerous as the type used in swimming pools, which is refined to an extremely fine particulate.

Yes, that is for sure. The non food grade stuff is just asking for a bad case of the silicosis blues.
Definitely only food grade, and I agree, try not to breathe in too much of the dust, or even any at all.
but that is a bit of a utopia, as it does throw up dust.

The salt helps though, and salt itself is effective against fleas, and flea larvae too.
but makes for a messy house.

no change for me from the normal
lol

The vets i work with swear by it. It shreds the bodies and skeletons of the parasites, even when wet...

ok, maybe I'll give it a go for the cats, as I can't seem to get worming tablets into them any more.

Don't know I am just going soft.

Oh! Get a Pet Piller, you can find them on Amazon. It makes the process so much less bloody ;)

Good luck for your new life Arcadius. We have a lot in common. I was threw in a bush by a running car. I could barely walk. Thanks to the lovely cures of the rescue volunteers and of my new human dad now I'm fine and happy. @arbitrarykitten If you are interested in my story visit my blog 😺

Awe, thank you so much <3

Wow such a cute little cat. Bdw how much time it took her to get fully recovered. As she might be traumatised of what had happened previously.

I cared for him for 6 months before he and I were both comfortable finding a forever home for him :)

In a caring environment, the trauma heals with time. And I am careful to screen potential owners. Most actually send me periodic updates- there's another cat, an orange tom, who came to my rescue at the same time who went with a military couple who could not have kids. He is also traveling the world with his new family as the husband is stationed somewhere new every year or two :) He has adapted quite well to the moving, certainly a cat who loves to travel!

Nice, you are doing a good job. I hope people like you should exist more and more who can actually feel the pain of animals. I guess very few are there who has a kind heart like you.
Great job. #theunmentionables

There are a few rescues, but it's difficult because yes we get a bit of food, and most medical supplies, but most of the money needed comes from our own pockets. Financial contributions are usually taken by the humane societies and animal shelters. I am sure more would open their homes to rescuing if the economy were better.

But not one of us would ever stop our labors of love <3

how do you get the food and medical supplies?
I have a vet who treats me pretty well, but it's just volume discount really.

Donations. Fundraisers. The medical is provided by the Vets as I am a certified rescue.

there's the big difference, I am completely off the books, and probably illegal too.

lol

lol! Yea, probably. But you're doing a wonderful thing <3

wow... I like your blogs... specially the photos of kitten with flower... upvoted done...;)

Awwww poor guy. I'm glad you were able to care for him. Good for you.

He was one of my first rescues when I first sorta "fell into" the business ;)

I am honored I can do this type of work <3 Thank you!

You are doing great work. Good karma points for you for sure!

Great article! That wet cat looks really funny :D thumbs up

He's beautiful!!! I rescued my first kitten last year and it led to a love like no other. Sadly he was only with me for 6 months before he passed away, but I would do it again any time.

Hi you! How are you?

Awe, poor guy. Yea, rescues, to me, seem to have a greater and deeper love. They know what it's like on the other side...

Honestly, when he died, for a day or 2 I wanted to die too. And that is while I have 3 kids. Obviously I came to my senses, but I feel a craving to rescue again.

Awe <3

Yes, rescue again, you're being drawn to it :)
