Facebook announced in a statement that in early 2019, an error was discovered in its system and would have led to the storage in RF of millions of user passwords. These belong to the social network’s users, but also those from Instagram or Facebook Lite (a version of Facebook for users with low bandwidth).
The exact number of assigned accounts is not known yet, but the figure is estimated between 200 and 600 million, which is not negligible. In its press release on the case, Facebook claims that the passwords were not removed from the Facebook system, but indicates that users affected by the security breach will be directly contacted.
In a blog post (titled "Keeping Passwords Secure", we appreciate the irony) signed by Pedro Canahuati, director at Facebook tells:
"To be clear, these passwords were never visible to anyone outside of Facebook and we have found no evidence to date that anyone internally abused or improperly accessed them."
The law of series
In an article published in parallel with Facebook's release, the American journalist Brian Krebs offers a much less glowing picture of this security breach. According to Krebs sources, the data were technically accessible by about 20,000 Facebook employees and the bug is like those whose have already affected Twitter or Github in the past year.
Some of the passwords affected by the breach go back to 2012. More worrying: according to the journalist’s sources, about 2,000 Facebook employees would have made about 9 million requests for elements containing data in readable format. Facebook refuses to comment on these figures, but it shows that the internal investigation is far from over.
