Many security applications for Android are unable to detect most malware that can contaminate your smartphone.

The info
The AV-Comparatives antivirus testing agency has just released a study that reveals that out of 250 tested Android security applications, only 80 were found to detect more than 30% of malware, without false alarms. And only 23 applications were able to detect all the malware samples used for the test.
What does that entail
So, you have to choose wisely the antivirus or the security application for your Android smartphone. Only a few are really effective. Some just use a "blacklist" that can be easily circumvented by hackers. The AV-Comparatives website cites Avast, AVG, AVIRA, Bitdefender, F-Secure, Kaspersky Lab, McAfee, Sophos, Symantec and Trend Micro amongst others as "good students" (100% detection score). It is therefore advisable to choose a known and reputable app.
The context
For its testing campaign, AV-Comparatives evaluated 250 security apps for Android and used 2,000 malware samples and 100 samples of healthy programs that could generate false alarms. The tests were mainly done with a Samsung Galaxy S9 smartphone running Android 8.0. In case of compatibility issues, some apps have been tested with a Nexus 5 smartphone running Android 6.01.
Their conclusion
When it comes to choosing an Android security app, we recommend considering the following factors. Using user ratings is clearly not effective, as the vast majority of users will give their rating based solely on the user experience, without having any idea as to whether the app offers effective protection. Some other reviews will have been faked by developers. Most of the 250 apps we looked at had a review score of 4 or higher on the Google Play Store. Similarly, the number of downloads can only be a very rough guide; a successful scam app may be downloaded many times before it is found to be a scam.
A recent “last updated” date also does not seem to be a good quality indicator, as many low-scoring apps had relatively recent updates.
