While tech giants are awash in cash, data and ambition, they are also increasingly involved in controversy. A wide range of concerns have recently dogged Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple, including their influence on consumer privacy, public discourse and labor conditions.

Now, the Federal Trade Commission and the US Department of Justice would have agreed to share anti-trust surveillance between the two technology giants. The FTC will deal with Amazon and the Ministry of Google.

“This is more of a warning to the companies that they’re being carefully scrutinized and they need to be careful not to play fast and loose given their dominant positions in the digital marketplace,” said Gene Kimmelman, a former senior antitrust official at the Justice Department who is now president of the consumer group Public Knowledge.

Does Amazon have too much power?

This distribution revealed by the Washington Post would aim to better investigate the potential anti-competitive behaviour of these two companies. An unsuccessful investigation has already been conducted on Google. But this would be a first for Amazon.

In the United States, the Democratic side has repeatedly expressed concern about the power and domination of Jeff Bezos' company in online retailing.

It should be recalled that the European Union has been working on this subject for a long time. In particular, it has condemned Google on several occasions. A fine of €1.5 billion for violating antitrust laws was imposed last March. Amazon has also been under investigation since September.

“It’s time to fight back,” Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a Democratic candidate for president, said after news of the Google developments emerged. Senators Josh Hawley, Republican of Missouri, and Richard Blumenthal, Democrat of Connecticut, each said the scrutiny of Google was overdue.

And it should continue like this!
