They only disappear if users decide to delete them manually, through the Amazon website.
When questioned by US Senator Chris Coons, Amazon confirmed that voice commands to interact with the Alexa assistant were recorded and stored on its servers without ever being deleted. The company explained this in a letter dated 28 June 2019.
“I appreciate that Amazon responded promptly to my concerns, and I’m encouraged that their answers demonstrate an understanding of the importance of and a commitment to protecting users’ personal information. The American people deserve to understand how their personal data is being used by tech companies, and I will continue to work with both consumers and companies to identify how to best protect Americans’ personal information.”
However, the user has the option of manually deleting them by going to the "Alexa Privacy" section on the website.
The deletion of a recording logically destroys the transcription of the recording. However, on this point, Amazon's response is not entirely certain.
"When a customer deletes a voice recording, we delete the transcripts associated with the customer’s account of both of the customer’s request and Alexa’s response. We already delete those transcripts from all of Alexa’s primary storage systems, and we have an ongoing effort to ensure those transcripts do not remain in an of Alexa’s other storage systems," Amazon's letter states.
As a result, the company "leaves open the possibility that transcripts of users' voice interactions with Alexa will not be deleted from all Amazon servers, even after a user has deleted a voice recording," says Senator Chris Coons.
Moreover, even if the recording and transcription are deleted, there will still be data generated by the interaction: ordering a book, setting up an alarm clock, creating an appointment, etc. This transactional data may be shared with third parties if the voice commands are placed through an Amazon Skill extension.
It's always better to know that and this is AGAIN a good reason not to buy stuff like that, no? ^^
