in #news5 years ago

Hackers managed to infiltrate Yandex's computer networks for several weeks. They were looking to hack into the accounts of some of the company's developers, probably in search of technical information.

The Regin spy software resurfaces. Revealed in 2014 by Symantec, this highly sophisticated tool comes from the arsenal of Anglo-Saxon intelligence agencies (Five Eyes) and has been seen in the networks of some operators.

It was then used to spy on the European Union’s authorities in Brussels. It was also found the same year on a USB key of an employee of the German Chancellor.

A new version of this software was recently found in Moscow, this time at the Yandex search engine.
According to Reuters, which relies on four anonymous sources, it allowed hackers to infiltrate Russian Google's computer networks in October and November 2018. They would have stayed there for several weeks before being discovered.

The company reportedly called on Kaspersky to analyse the situation. According to the security researchers' conclusion, the hackers were trying to hack into the accounts of Yandex developers’ group, probably to retrieve technical information about the platform's authentication methods.

Yandex confirms without giving any details

For its part, Yandex confirmed the piracy with Reuters. "This particular attack was detected at a very early stage by the Yandex security team. It was fully neutralized before any damage was done. Yandex security team’s response ensured that no user data was compromised by the attack," said Yandex spokesman Ilya Grabovsky, without further clarification.

Yandex has more than 108 million users in Russia. The company also operates in Belarus, Kazakhstan and Turkey.

Who is behind this attack? According to Reuters sources, the malicious code found at Yandex has never been seen before. It is therefore likely that this is a later version developed from the code found in 2014.

This pleads more for the thesis of an operation of a Five Eyes country than for that of a lure left by a group of third party hackers. However, it is not possible to know, at this stage, which country was precisely at the manoeuvre.
