// Hacking NEWS // Cybercriminals Have Diverted the DNS from Several Countries

in #news6 years ago

The group called "Sea Turtle" hacked Internet registers to take control of several national domain names’ extensions. This allowed them to usurp any site in these countries.

The info

Cisco Talos security researchers have just released an analysis on the "Sea Turtle" hackers’ group. These hackers, who are most likely a government emanation, have spied on 40 organizations in the Middle East. To do this, they did not hesitate to hack into registers to be able to divert several national domain names’ extensions, including the Egypt one. This allowed them to usurp any site under this extension.

According to Cisco Talos, this is the first time that hackers have come to such extremes as part of computer espionage operations.
And the National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center (NCCIC), part of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), is aware of a global Domain Name System (DNS) infrastructure hijacking campaign. We will see what they will really do against it!

What does this entail

DNS hijacking is a big hacking classic. Modifying the data of a DNS server makes possible to redirect Internet users to malicious pages to intercept sensitive data, such as identifiers and passwords.
But according to Cisco Talos, attacking the DNS in such a violent way is irresponsible for a government organization, as this risks weakening a significant part of the web infrastructure, which is a global common good.
