60 years of my favourite music – some New Zealand classics

Our friend @trevor.george set me off on this journey into some of the Kiwi music I missed out in my first go through of the 60 years.

In his post today, he included a link to Sharon O’Neill and Asian Paradise. In no time at all, I was down the rabbit hole. There is something unique about music from New Zealand bands, and I don’t think it’s just the funny accents. I don’t know how many of these songs made it beyond Australasia, so I invite you to enjoy some classics from my distant youth!

We’ll start with Sharon O’Neill again, this time with her classic hit Maxine, from 1983

Now let’s step back in time a bit. Space Waltz - Out On The Street from 1974

From 1977, Dragon with April Sun In Cuba

From 1979, Mi Sex with Computer Games

Also from 1979, we have I See Red from iconic band Split Enz

From 1980, we have Bliss by Th’ Dudes. If you’re wondering why anybody would drinking bliss, Wikipedia has this to say:

The music video was recorded at The Cricketer's Arms in Wellington. The song was written when the band were in Sydney, and so includes a number of references to Sydney landmarks. It was written as a satirical take on the drunken audiences the band had to play to, so there is some irony in that it has become a drinking song. The song began with the title 'piss' (for alcohol), but was changed after pressure from the record company.

From 1981, we have the Swingers - Counting The Beat

Now on to Peking Man - A Room That Echoes, from 1986

Jumping into a new decade, from 1991, Crowded House with Four Seasons in One Day

Although there were quite a few Kiwi classics in my 60 years, and another 10 here, I could have kept going. There have been so many fabulous New Zealand bands over the decades, all deserving of a wider audience. Maybe we’ll have to look at Kiwi music again another time.
