Reflection

This letter written by the apostle Paul from the captivity (probably when he was imprisoned in Ephesus in 56 AD) is addressed to the Philippians, a community much appreciated by him. From prison, the apostle encourages the Philippians to wage their own struggles for the Gospel, invites them to remain united in faith and in the same spirit (unity) and to follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout. The proclamation of the Gospel and the way of life of the first Christians could awaken adversaries (people confronted by the truth of the Gospel) and with them many difficulties (such as those that Paul himself experienced), that is why he invites them to give witness to holiness and of the faithful following of Jesus, exhorts them to remain firm, immovable in their convictions even if they go through adverse circumstances. It is very important to take these exhortations into account, reflect on them, discuss them with other brothers in the faith and put them into practice in our Christian communities, the advance of secularization in our societies and the installation of ideologies contrary to the Gospel, are a real and growing phenomenon which requires us, now more than ever, to remain firm in the same spirit to fight with one heart for the faith of the Gospel. May Almighty God enlighten us with his Holy Spirit and keep us firm and hopeful despite difficulties in the struggle for the faith of the Gospel. Amen.

27 Solamente procuren que su vida esté a la altura del Evangelio de Cristo. Permanezcan firmes en un mismo espíritu y luchen con un solo corazón por la fe del Evangelio. Ojalá lo pueda comprobar si voy donde ustedes y, si no voy, pueda al menos oírlo.

Reflexión

Esta carta escrita por el apóstol Pablo desde la cautividad (probablemente cuando era preso en Éfeso en el año 56) va dirigida a los filipenses, una comunidad muy apreciada por él. Desde la cárcel, el apóstol anima a los filipenses a librar sus propias luchas por el Evangelio, los invita a mantenerse unidos en la fe y en un mismo espíritu (unidad) y siguiendo en todo el Evangelio de Cristo Jesús. La proclama del Evangelio y la forma de vida de los primeros cristianos podía despertar adversarios (gente confrontada por la verdad del Evangelio) y con ellos muchas dificultades (tal como las que el mismo Pablo experimentaba), por eso los invita a dar testimonio de santidad y del fiel seguimiento de Jesús, los exhorta a mantenerse firmes, inamovibles en sus convicciones aunque pasen por circunstancias adversas. Es muy importante tomar en cuenta estas exhortaciones, reflexionarlas, comentarlas con otros hermanos en la fe y ponerlas en práctica en nuestras comunidades cristianas, el avance de la secularización en nuestras sociedades y la instalación de ideologías contrarias al Evangelio, son un fenómeno real y creciente que nos exige, ahora más que nunca, permanecer firmes en un mismo espíritu para luchar con un sólo corazón por la fe del Evangelio. Que Dios todo poderoso nos ilumine con Su Santo Espíritu y nos mantenga firmes y esperanzados a pesar de las dificultades en la lucha por la fe del Evangelio. Amén.
