The space between: A 50-word short story

in #fiftywords6 years ago (edited)

Here it is -- my 50-word short story for this week's 50-word challenge prompt, space. It has been a great week. The "space" prompt inspired 50-worders like never before. Check them out! It's so much fun to be a part of this initiative.

Between me and the milky way there is space. Between you and the milky way there is space. You watch its clusters of heavenly stars, celestial beauty so profound it makes you cry. Between you and me there is space -- 3,149 miles. A continent, a galaxy, what’s the difference?

Thank you for reading! I would love your support, in the form of a comment, upvote, resteem or SBD transfer. (Just kidding about that last one!)

Here's my collection of 50-word stories:
Elsie's view
Just a tree in a field
Nathan’s waterfall
A walk in the woods
The church mouse
The farmers' market
The tiny hunter
The map
Ghost fair
Departure from Castle Island
Conspirators and lies
Getting to know you
The man in hiding
Mermaid dreams
Time to say goodbye

It's always nice to see your positive and uplifting interpretation of your own prompt, especially as somewhat of a counterpoint to other, darker pieces. Beautiful, @jayna! :)

Thank you, @negativer! Funny, I think of this story as the saddest I’ve written so far. The idea is that two people are separated by the continental U.S., and that while they have in common their distance from the Milky Way, the distance between themselves feels just as far. (Well, it somehow made sense in my mind.) 😊

The cosmos does make me tearful with joy of the possibly that exist out there among the stars.

And it is so beautiful!

You watch its clusters of heavenly stars, celestial beauty so profound it makes you cry.

A beautiful phrase!

I like the whole sort of banalization of space, almost as if sometimes distance was meaningless. Also I love how the story both covers 'space' as in physical space and 'space' as in outer space.

Great story :)

Thank you, @isa93. I’m so glad you enjoyed it.

Beautifully written... and the picture goes so well with it too...

A poignant 50 words, Jayna:) Well done:)

Very beautiful story.

Thank you, @clacrax! I truly appreciate your nice comment.

I love this, Jayna...

There is no practical difference for the pair thus separated...

Well, maybe a little. You can skype and text at continental distances, hardly at galactic ones... Unless you know how to make a scalar energy transceiver...

How about a teleportation machine? Step in the booth and dial your loved one's number...

Thanks for your prompts and stories. :D
