the last board
she laid the hammer on the rail and wiped her brow with the back of her sleeve. one more board and it would be sealed. forever.
her shoulders ached, everything was sore. she could just go sit in the car. close her eyes for a moment. relax. just for one minute.
everything was in the house. aside from a few items of clothes and toiletries she had left it all- there was no point. no point in memories or keepsakes. all she had truly wanted was gone anyway.
she couldn't bear to see him in her new place.
she still didn't know where that would be, not that it mattered. there was no place calling her. she wasn't being beckoned by a pink sand beach. or tempted by a culture unknown. and of course all the comforts of home were being shut away for good by her.
or was it from her?
she used to belong. that feeling was ever present and kept her dreams light and her smile long.
there was no place she belonged. not anymore.
she allowed a daydream to play behind her closed lids as she sank against the wall. she accidentally on purpose didn't snuff her cigarette out completely before it was lost in the dead flowerbeds lining the whitewashed wood porch. the flames grew fast, tickling the windowsills before she was even five miles down the road. the flames would devour the old house quickly.
perhaps they would consume her pain. turn it to ash. from which she would spring anew, growing green and fresh from the remains. reborn like a mythical creature. she would fly. soar. know happiness again, reborn and untouched.
she sighed.
she wished.
her body protesting, she forced herself at the door. adjusting the nail into position she hammered the final board into place.
dreams and nightmares sealed inside. but the nightmares... not so much.
not all love stories have a happy ending.

Nice opening paragraph. I've been reading too much of the wrong stuff lately. I was sure this story had to do with serial killers, rape, serial killers and rape, or demons.
