Beer review - Beaverstown Brewery Neck Oil Session IPA

in #beersaturday6 years ago

Another week, another IPA ??

I was down in the very south of Ireland on a stag recently. We went to Dingle, a very popular destination with tourists and Irish people alike, it is a real little gem. We had an unreal few days and the sun shined like we were on the Mediterranean. Sheer bliss... But it's a different story when you wake up the next morning head first down in a sleeping bag, and your trying to get the zip open with your toes!!

So, up we got on day two anyway, and hit down to the town for a bite to eat. The hunger was well established at this stage, and I'd have eaten the hind leg of a low flying duck. We found a tasteful little cafe that did breakfast, so in we went to Pantri Cafe, and ordered the grub. The menu had a great array of juices, but the last thing my system needed at this stage was carrot, lime, orange and ginger juice.. the stomach just wouldn't know how to process it!! The lovely waitress then made a legendary suggestion...

"Will you have a beer with the breakfast lads?"

"Begod and we will!!!" says I.

and to my surprise, they had craft beers, and a funky looking canned IPA... Not one to judge a book by a cover, but I hoped this one lived up to it's funky looking exterior, and do you what?

IT DID!

This weeks beer of the week is.....

Beaverstown Brewery Neck Oil Session IPA

Intro

You've got to be joking me! Another IPA.... I know, I know, I'm as predictable as rain in Ireland...

This one was enjoyed with breakfast, which to be fair is very unusal for me, and I would say most people, but when in Rome and all of that.... I was on a stag, and we had day 2 of pints ahead of us, so, I said why not get the hair of the dog in early, and it worked a treat. After the breakfast, the best man had lined up a distillery tour with whiskey and gin tasting. The prospect of this was daunting, but it actually turned out to be brilliant and really interesting - I am planning a post on this soon, so keep an eye out for that.

Review

This one was really easy drinking, and was just what the doctor ordered. The smell of rich fruity hops on opening was very inviting, and it was not a false advertisement, as the taste matched the smell. This was a lovely hoppy beer, with a great mouthfeel and finish.

It poured a nice hazy yellow colour and was served up at the perfect temperature by the staff at The Pantri There was something distinctly tropical about this one, with grapefruit and pineapple flavours coming through.

The carbonation was solid, with a nice big head, which laced well.

This is one I would recommend.

Stats

  • Brewer: Beaverstown Brewery, Unit 17, Lockwood Industrial Park, Mill Mead Rd, London N17 9QP, UK
  • Alcohol Content: 4.3%
  • IBU: 35
  • Malt: Extra Pale, Carapils
  • Hops: Columbus, Centennial, Simcoe, Amarillo, Galaxy, Vic Secret, Mosaic
  • Size: 330ml/33cl can
  • What they say: Our every day, all day, easy drinking, go to ipa. This started life as a home-brew. We wanted to create a light, crisp, punchy, go to beer! A beer that you know you can pick up and appreciate or simply get it down ya neck. Extra pale base malts are used to keep it crisp and give the hops a great platform to dance on. Masses of hop additions during the whirlpool and a huge dose of dry hops make this a brilliantly ‘easy’ ipa.

Neck Oil, does not sound to appetizing!! Nice post.

Ha ha, ya, it does not sound too tasty, but it really is! :o)

I miss the variety from Beavertown brewery!
One of the beers I miss the most from the UK.
Neck oil is luscious and light enough to drink all day, but if you can try their 'Gamma Ray IPA' or their bloody orange for something fruity!

hey, sorry for late reply, just getting around to this now! Busy few days :o)

It really is a lovely beer, and I'll def keep an eye out for Gamma Ray.... Thanks for the heads up..
