Irish Craft Beer review #11 Jack Cody's Amber Ale
OK, I'm back to reviewing some nice Irish craft beers again!!
The last couple of weeks, I included two beers which I had on holidays in Spain, both fairly average to be fair, but blinkered by sunshine and ice cold beer, they got quite good scores. Had I drank them on a rainy day in Ireland, they would have been closer to 1.5 or 2 out of 5 :o)
So moving along to this week, I have gone for an Amber Ale brewed not so far from where I live. The Brewery is called jack Cody's and they only opened their doors in 2015. They actually started out life as a food truck making mean-ass handmade burgers! The beer I am reviewing here "Smiggy" was their very first beer which they brewed to pair with their signature burger. You really can't beat a burger! Actually ya can, a beer trumps it.. But a beer and a burger!! Now you're talking!! :o)
So this weeks beer of the week is.....
Jack Cody's Amber Ale
Intro
The label on this one jumped out at me at the off licence and then I also remembered a friend recently commenting on how nice this one was, so I said I'd have to see for myself.
Review
This was an easy drinking amber ale. It poured a dark murky amber orange colour.
Aroma was of light pine, citrus and caramel.
Taste was distinctly caramel, with a nice balance of orange and pine and possibly a touch of toffee. Nice mouthfeel, with soft to medium carbonation.
Strong malty after taste. A fine brew indeed.
This one will certainly grace the Ablaze beer rack again in the near future, one of the better beers I've tasted recently.
The lacing was quite good, and this one formed a nice creamy head but it did dissipate pretty quickly.
This one definitely gets the nod of approval from me, next time hopefully the sun is shining and I can throw a few burgers on the BBQ to accompany the beer..

- What they say: Pale ale malt with light and dark crystal malts, fermented with an American Ale yeast and bittered and flavoured with Simcoe and Citra hops – great with barbecue and strong cheese.
Oh, and just in case you were wondering about the plants in the shots, they are my family of Aloe Vera plants. My sister-in-law gave me one a few years ago, and once a year they start sprouting some new baby plants, which I now give to friends and family. They are the absolute business for a sunburnt forehead, which I often get when playing golf or surfing at the weekend.

Looks decent. I wouldn't be a huge fan of ale compared to a lot of other drinks but I would give it a try if there was one here.
The Ale bit is a bit misleading to be honest with you. I don't like English Ales at all... This is more like beer than Ale, but has a nice Hoppy, slightly fruity flavour... Not everyone's cup of tea, but I'd far prefer an IPA or Amber Ale over a regular beer now.. I find the regular ones very generic and almost watery now..

Ya can't beat a burger and beer!! I only started really getting into beer since the craft beer craze took over here in Ireland in the last few years... I'm not too fond of regular beers now anymore... No idea what you would call a beer expert, and I am far from one, but learning all the time. I might look into brewing some of my own some day, if I can find some time!! :o)

That is a beautiful beer! It’s doubtful I would ever find it here in Minnesota, but you never know. I was indeed wondering about the plants. Actually it was the plant decor (specifically that silly bee) that captured my interest!
I'm not sure if these guys export much yet, but hopefully they can grow and start exporting as they have some really good craft beers, that would do well overseas.. Ha ha that bee is belonged to my wife, she likes these little things you can pick up at the garden centre :o) Adds some nice colour to the place :o)

Looks very good indeed! The story about the burger-makers and the beer is special in a way. A great to see brewery born in the burger truck.

Definitely, and the food truck is no more, they have pumped all their finance and energy into the brewery now. Hopefully it goes well for them - it's a very competitive marketplace..
I'm always such a sucker for a funny label! Your description of the taste makes me want to go out and give this a try, thank you! I'm about to eat breakfast and all I want after reading this is a beer and a burger. You know, health food ;)

Yes, Beer and Burgers are the centre piece of any good food pyramid... :o) In fact, I'm pretty sure they are super foods!! Forget avocados, blueberries and seaweed, it's all about burgers and beer!!
Those burgers look great (I see it is not yours, but they still look great), the beer also sounds great.
Ya the burgers look savage, good job they have one of them tooth pick type things to keep them held together. Things could get very messy very quickly!! Especially with my beard :o)
Both beer and burgers look amazing, if I could choose only one it would be a hard pick. Interestingly my favorite Croatian Brewery also serves burgers and beer :)
They are a great combination!! When we get some good weather here, which is not that often, there is nothing I love more than a few beers in the back garden with my trusty BBQ and some friends listening to or playing some music..
