Irish Beer review #9 Kinnegar The Devil's Backbone Amber Ale
I love the name of this one!! The Devil's Backbone, a fiery amber ale!!
I had a few of these on Friday night, chilling out watching a bit of telly. My wife went to bed early so I watched golf, and then watched the pilot of a show a mate had recommended called "Rick and Morty" It's actually really funny. I only watched one episode, but I'm looking forward to seeing a few more..
Anyway, enough about TV shows, and more beer talk!
This week's beer of the week is
Kinnegar The Devil's Backbone Amber Ale
Intro
I have drank Kinnegar beers before, and they have always been good, so I was looking forward to downing a few of these, after a busy week at work. You cant beat some salty food when sculling a few beers!! Peanuts or crisps are a favourite of mine, but this time it was crisps.. One bag of cheese and onion and one bag of buffalo... Delicious!!
Review
I poured this one into my usual tasting glass. I got the glass free with my advent calender beer box a few years ago, and it has become my drinking glass ever since. This one poured a hazy brown colour and was very pleasing to the eye.
The head was a decent size, faded quite quickly. There was good carbonation and quite good lacing was noticable. There was a nice strong smell of dried fruit on opening, and this carried through to the taste also. It was added to with a taste of toffee, some spice of some sort and there was a chocolatey taste at the finish.
All in all, a nice solid beer, which went down very well on my Friday evening after work.
Kinnegar hails from the hilly fields and farms of northeast Donegal. The beer is named after nearby Kinnegar Beach just north of Rathmullan.
They don’t filter or pasteurise, allowing the yeast to carbonate the beer naturally during fermentation. There is a real farmhouse small scale ethos to everything they do, but they recently opened a new facility, which will hopefully help them to grow more both nationally and internationally. Keep an eye out for these ones, they are well worth a try.
