Fuji Mountain Steemit Thumbnail.jpg

Hello dear Steemians! Today I would like to share a tutorial on how to paint Fuji Shibazakura Festival. Before I proceed to the tutorial, let me explain a little about it. Fuji is a place in Japan and Shibazakura is a pink moss which is a spring flower in Japan. The Fuji Shibazakura Festival is held for one month from the mid of April to mid of May. Many people visit the Fuji mountains to enjoy the beautiful pink flowers which contrast with the blue sky during this popular festival. So, the festival is going on right now and if you love a blissful day with beautiful pink flowers, then do take part in it =)

Tools and Materials

  • Buncho oil pastels
  • A good quality artblock that is durable
  • A 2B pencil to draw
  • Some tissue to clean your fingers after smudging
  • A rough paper to test colours

Step by Step Tutorial

This is my basic drawing of the festival scenery. I didn't add details because I just wanted to plan where I would like all the important parts to be.

I began my painting with white to protect some areas which I wanted to be lighter than the rest of the sky. Then I used a sky blue to paint most of the sky. I also added some royal blue and violet to make the sky look wider with some shading.

Then, I painted the Fuji mountain. I used some white on the top area first to create a snow-like region. After that, I added some prussian blue to create some shadows on the lower areas of the mountain. I also mixed the white and blue in the middle areas to reduce harsh looking contrast of the colours. At the lower area, I added some purple to create more shape and at last I added some deep periwinkle (a bluish purplish colour) at the bottom.

I wanted to paint some distant trees, so I painted the ground area first. Then, I painted the trees in many shades of green. I also mixed some prussian blue and a small amount of black to create some shadows on the most distant trees.

Next, I painted the furthest moss flowers in a rose colour. I also added some dark pink so that it won't look too flat. After that, I used a whitish purple to draw the outlines of the two main regions of the pink moss flowers.

Then, I painted the lake. Unfortunately, I didn't have the blue I was looking for. So, I had to use the trial and error method on a rough paper to mix colours and see if I I'm able to create the right colour. I managed to do it by mixing some prussian blue and the darkest green that I have, along with a small amount of sky blue. However, the colours looked too dark on the rough paper. Hence, I coloured them faintly on the artwork and smudged with my finger to blend the colours. That way, I was able to prevent them from looking too vibrant and dark for the water. I also added some almond green to create highlights on the little waves of the water and prussian blue to create the shadows.

After that, I painted the rest of the artwork. I used various shades of pink for the moss flowers. I also tapped them on the paper to create some distinct looking flowers so they will have some body rather than looking like a flat layer of flowers. Apart from the pinks, I added some orange, red and maroon as well for the tapped flower dots. After that, I added a small pathway where people will be able to walk to explore the beautiful pink moss flowers. This is my finished artwork and I hope that you like it. Thank you for reading my post and have a great day/evening ahead ♥

It's always great to see wonderful artworks around like you have in there. Sometimes I wonder what the human race would be without art. Art is great and Art is really life. I really love how you treated your painting. The way you separated the sky from the mountain there the blend of your blues was so wonderful. Then how you treated the plants with its greenish nature. Then finally how you spread the spring flowers around to make your scene Look amazing.

I really enjoyed every second I spent on your blog and I love it with you showing every little bit of steps you went through to produce this wonderful painting of yours. Good work and keep the artist spirit up always

Thank you so much for the comment! I think the world will be boring without art and creativity. Everything will seem to be black and white and limited unlike now where we can let our imagination run wild and free. I'm glad that you enjoyed reading my post =)

Hello @yashny and congrats on the painting. You have a very interesting technique, You're working starting from the upper part of the paper and you work your way down. Interesting. The colors are so vivid.
The food looks also good, it's all new to me as I've never been to Malaysia but I would be glad to taste it :)

Thank you! Yes, I wanted to complete it gradually in a pattern this time and I generally prefer to include some vibrant colours on my artworks. I feel it adds some 'life' to the paintings. You're always welcome here =) Since Malaysia is a multicultural country we have a large variety of food here :)

wow not only you dedicate to the plastic arts but also to the culinary arts. I liked the pink color of the surface ... Although being honest I think I was more interested in your recipe post. is that they look delicious, especially the noodle dish.
