What does it mean?
The dictionaries tell us that...
-it means a principal female dancer in a ballet company, or any female ballet dancer
-it can also mean a very low-heeled or heelless shoe, very similar in resemblance with a ballet slipper
Origin
The word comes from Italian, feminine of ballerino "dancing master", from ballare , meaning "to dance". The first known use in English appears to be in 1815.
