esoteric

/ˌɛsəˈtɛrɪk,ˌiːsə-/

Now let's hear it:

Thanks to Emma Saying for the pronunciation.

What does it mean?

The dictionaries tell us that..

-it means something that it's difficult to understand, or understood only by a small number of people with a specialized knowledge
-it can also mean something having to do with highly theoretical concepts and without obvious practical applications, often with religious or mystical connotations.

Origin

The word comes from Ancient Greek ἐσωτερικός, meaning "belonging to an inner circle". The first known use in English, appears to be around 1600. The opposite of esoteric is exoteric, meaning "suitable to be imparted to the public". It is said that those who were seen as worthy to attend Aristotle's learned discussions were known as his "esoterics", while those who only attended the popular evening lectures were called "exoterics".

Tiffany may seem esoteric to those those who don't know her well but not to those who do.

Naah, she is definitely exoteric, worthy to be imparted onto public, making world better place :P

Definitely going to start using this word in my day to day life :)
