grotesque

/ɡrə(ʊ)ˈtɛsk/

Let's hear it !

What does it mean ?

The dictionaries tell us:

-it means comically or repulsively ugly or distorted, synonym with "malformed" , "deformed" , "twisted" etc

-it means inappropriate to a shocking degree, synonym with "outrageous" , "ludicrous" and even "crazy"

Origin

Apparently the first known use was around 1560 , and it comes from Italian grottesco, meaning, literally "of a cave" , from the Italian grotta. Only in the 18th century, grotesque started to be used as an adjective for strange, ugly , unpleasant or disgusting, or with the sense of uncomfortable bizarreness.
