One word each day: Day 8

in #wordnerd8 years ago (edited)

Aaand time for a new favorite word of mine. Today we have a lovely word...

empirical

/ɛmˈpɪrɪk(ə)l,ɪm-/

Let's hear it:

What does it mean?

Well according to the dictionaries it means:

-it means verifiable by observation rather then theory or logic, based on , or concerned with , synonym with "seen" , "factual", "experimental" , "verifiable" etc.

Origin

Well, first known use of empirical seems to be in 1569 , and it first appeared in English as an adjective, meaning "in the manner of an empiric" (ancient sect of doctors, practicing medicine based only on experience). The term empiric comes from Latin empiricus, itself from Greek empeirikos. At the most basic it can be traced back to the verb peiran , meaning "to try, attempt , or experiment".

I'll end it again with a quote by Michael Shermer:

" Being a skeptic just means beaing rational and empirical: thinking and seeing before believing."
