Origin and History
This word has a really interesting origin. It comes as a variation of clew meaning a ball of thread or yarn from Middle English "clewe" , from Old English "clēowen", meaning sphere , ball , ball of thread ; mass , group , in this sense with reference to the one ball of yarn , Theseus used as a guide out of the Labyrinth.
In 1620 , it was used with the figurative sense of "that witch points the way" , waiting until 1934 , to be used with "to inform someone of important fact" sense. Not many people know that , the word "clue" also has a nautical use: "to haul up (a sail) by means of clue-lines" in the "wound ball of yarn" sense.
